Book Description

September 1, 2007
More and more women are becoming mothers after age thirty-five whether by choice or due to circumstances beyond their control--after years of longing or as an unexpected blessing, through childbirth or adoption. But with many resources geared toward younger mothers, these "Mommy-come-latelys" need encouragement and wisdom from someone who has been there. Beth Vogt became a mother again at age forty-one. With humor and practical advice based on her own experience and that of others, she encourages and guides late-in-life moms in emotional adjustments, medical issues, and changes in their relationships with others. The wisdom, perspective, and resources offered here will help women welcome and embrace life as a mom. Includes a foreword by Twila Paris.

Now she encourages you to embrace your status as a "mommy-come-lately." Whether you're planning, pregnant, or adopting, you'll find expert advice on • understanding medical concerns • keeping yourself healthy before and during pregnancy • adjusting to changes in your relationships • parenting your "caboose baby" • and much more You'll also benefit from true stories of moms who've been there. More About the Author

Novelist Beth K. Vogt is a nonfiction author and editor who said she'd never write fiction. She's the wife of an Air Force physician (now in solo practice) who said she'd never marry a doctor -- or anyone in the military. She's a mom of four who said she'd never have kids. She's discovered that God's best often waits behind the doors marked "Never." Beth writes inspirational contemporary romance because she believes there's more to the happily ever after than the fairy tales tell us. She lives in Colorado with her husband and their 10-year-old "caboose kiddo." She and her husband enjoy any time their adult children come by for game nights, BBQs or just to hang out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Surprised by Christian "Flavor", June 7, 2008

This review is from: Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35 (Paperback)
As I read the introduction, with its bible reference and multiple mentions of God and prayer, I found myself looking again at the cover and title to see if I had missed something that would have told me this was a Christian book. I did not. That left me feeling duped, in a way. While the author goes "light" on her own references to God, church, prayer and "ministry," they ARE in the text, which to me personally was a turn off. Had I known this was the writer's perspective, I must admit I would not have bought this book. There were other subtle aspects of the text that, I felt, were influenced by a Christian perspective, such as multiple personal stories and examples of mothers who chose not to have prenatal testing because they would "accept the baby no matter what" and at least two who had babies with Down's Syndrome and viewed them as gifts that were supposed to happen. Now, I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a slight problem with those being the ONLY examples provided. There are many over 35 moms whose personal values and positions do not reflect this - had the book been obviously labeled as Christian in its perspective, it would be more legitimate for it to present only one perspective.

The other complaint I have about this book is that the author spends way too much time talking about her personal situation and family. Makes for a somewhat interesting read, but feels more like a memoir at times than a universally applicable book that focuses on general issues of older motherhood in a conceptual sense which is what I was looking for.

Overall, this was not the book I was expecting or hoping to read. I'll keep looking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful reading for women of any age, August 16, 2007
By
This review is from: Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35 (Paperback)
As a woman who passed 35 several years ago, but still hopes to have children, I found this book inspiring. Without sugar coating, this book explores the risks and rewards of many new moms. Be ready to laugh out loud at some of the personal stories, and maybe wipe away a tear or two as Moms and Dads share that life changing experience that is parenting.

As a mom who had my children after 30 (but before 35), I can say this book is practical and immensely readable. Any mom will find helpful advice in this book. Beth is candid and includes her own experience as well as those of numerous late-in-life moms and dads.
