Book Description

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage -- but Hannah’s doing it in the wrong order.

Hannah has a secret. She’s given up her dream of a traditional family and gone to a sperm bank. She’s thrilled to be pregnant, but she doesn’t want her handsome new boss Luke asking too many questions.

Luke is a high-powered trial attorney. He doesn’t have time for love, but he finds his new secretary Hannah increasingly attractive. And he senses that there’s something she’s not telling him.

Baby Comes First is a quirky, sweet romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance with all its Twists and Turns May 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't normally read Romance Books, except maybe Austen, Bronte, and Dickens, but the author of this little work announced it in a discussion group and it peaked my curiosity. It didn't take long to read: one evening.

To summarize: the book is charming! Hannah's biological clock is running, she isn't succeeding in the relationship jungle, and she desperately wants a child. A sperm bank offers one solution, but she doesn't want to handicap her child with "bad sperm." She does find a good candidate who has already donated his sperm, and that seems to solve her problems.

Only it doesn't solve her problems, it just makes everything more complicated. Yes, we are served up an entire entree of secret attractions, misunderstandings, snappy dialog, more misunderstandings, and morning sickness. OK, maybe it is not Austen, Bronte, or Dickens, but it is still an enjoyable journey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cute and enjoyable! April 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I came upon this book by accident, but I was glad I did. Book was interesting, I couldn't put it down and read it in a day! Book was very enjoyable. It starts out with Hannah, being a smart girl in her mid-30's working in a law firm. She liked her job, paid her well, but she felt her biological clock was ticking away with no prospects of getting married and starting a family. She takes it upon herself and decides to go through a fertility clinic and use donor sperm. The twist in this story is that she knew who the sperm came from. Maybe it was fate, but she was offered a job as his secretary. Hannah didn't want the job and certainly did everything she could to not get the job, but Luke liked her no bull crap attitude and hired her on the spot. Their working relationship begins and Hannah proves to be very smart, patient and puts up with his bad temper. The more time Luke spent with her, the more he felt she was hiding something from him.

Hannah began to know the man everyone around the office feared. He was actually a good man behind all that temper and work. She finds herself in a medical situation and realizes she is alone. Luke offers to help her out, for some unknown reason, he really liked Hannah. Soon Luke finds himself wanting to get married and being a father to Hannah's baby. How was she going to break the news to him? Can she make a marriage of convenience into a real one? That is for you to read.

Book was delightful and a joy to read. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it and next thing you knew, the book was ending. The epilogue was fantastic as well. Nicely done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Sweet Escape! April 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given an Advanced Reader Copy of "Baby Comes First". A quick romantic contemporary read; once I picked it up I just couldn't put it down. I expected it to be predictable but it surprised me and was a perfect most enjoyable escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare, intelligent romance March 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My favorite aspect of this novel is how both of the lead characters are intelligent and remain consistent with their perspectives throughout the story. Aside from a rather foolish/selfish decision by Hannah--a necessary device that gets the plot moving, and is later acknowledged as not the wisest decision--everything that both Hannah and Luke do is so refreshingly well-motivated. They make logical, clear-headed decisions, their motivations are well-explained by their backstories, and the conflict is entirely generated by the differences in their points of view. The chemistry takes a while to heat up, but even that transition feels entirely believable. In short, this romance never feels contrived, the climax is not the usual proposal trope--in fact, the wedding is merely a step along the way to building a strong *marriage*, a much more meaningful proposition--and the resolution of the sexual tension doesn't actually solve any problems: it just reveals the deeper issues of the heart that need to be addressed. A rich bit of insight there!

The writing style is fresh and engaging, avoiding overwrought descriptions of either emotions or physical attraction while still conveying the strength of both. There are some clever moments of light humor amidst plenty of entirely reasonable / believable drama. Farr maintains the tension throughout with some very skillful doling out of the information from both characters' points of view. Farr makes it clear that she's done her background research (e.g., on the legal profession and childbearing) without ever once distracting from the story by putting too much of it on display. It bolsters the believability of the tale.

There's a wonderfully healthy balance of power in the relationship.

More About the Author

Beverly Farr is half in love with Mr. Darcy, George Bailey, Rhett Butler, Mr. Chips, and Henry V, which makes her two and a half people.

"I love happy endings and I love to laugh. Since real life has a way of being tough sometimes, I write quirky, sweet romances to take the edge off.

What you will find in my stories:

1. Quirky, sweet romance.

2. Very little swearing. Some hells and damns, maybe even a b*tch, but no Lord's name in vain and no f-bombs.

3. No explicit sex scenes. Characters discuss sex, but any love scenes are off screen.

4. No vampires. At least, not yet."
