5.0 out of 5 stars The Baby Danced- I cried
Looking for more than a chick flick, or an action movie? This is what you are looking for. Admitidly, more for the females in the audiance but able to be enjoyed by both genders. This is an adult movie however, not for sexual inuindo, or for bad language, but more for adult concepts and ideas. However, I am only 16. I loved this movie, not only for the great acting...

I loved this movie, not only for the great acting of Stockard Channing (Rizo) but for the message it caries. To sum the movie up, a rich couple can't get pregnant so they place an add in the newspaper. A pregnant lady from Louisiana responds, she and her husband can't afford to keep their child. So the rich couple -adopts- her unborn child and her family untill she has the baby. The baby is born, but... -I won't ruin it for you- You laugh, you cry, and you get the rare oppurtunity to watch a movie that doesn't include a cliche plot. Enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Baby Dance, September 23, 2000

Just a wonderful movie that you can get so emotionally involved in that you forget it is only a movie. Acting by the 4 primary actors is superb. They make you feel just what each character is trying to portray. Definitly a 4 hankie movie. Pretty sure the movie will appeal more for women than men, but, if you're a "feeling-emotional" type of guy, you're going to love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Baby Dance [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I just saw this movie on Lifetime, and it was wonderful. I teach, and if I ever teach a women's studies class, this will definitely be must-see for my students. It deals with gender and class issues in a very sophisticated and entertaining way. An original and provocative movie.

As a master's level social worker who has worked in infant adoptions, this movie is an accurate depiction of one extreme. It illustrates the emotional stages a birth family as well as a potential adopting family can/ may experience. As each open adoption is unique, a combination of outcomes are possible. A combination of thought processes are possible. In performing seminars on adoption, I liked to provide a best and worse case scenario. The movie depicts a(not the) worse case scenario, but not the norm; however, people need to be informed. As with medications we are informed of all possible side affects SOME people experience.

The movie also is good to help adopting families understand the psychological themes a birth mother/ father may transition through, voiced or unvoiced. This would be helpful as a tool to help parties avoid some defensive responses when an insightful response would better serve them and all parties involved.

The movie was very well thought out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moving, intelligent and complex, October 16, 2010
This review is from: Baby Dance [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Tremendously moving, and ultimately very complex story of two couples - a rich California
couple planning to adopt a baby on birth from a poor Southern couple.

While the characters verge on cliché at first, and the set up feel a bit `neat', the writing
and acting (Laura Dern in particular) is so good that it's the rare film that transcends it's
own stereotypes to find something deeper and richer underneath. There are moments
that feel a bit schematic and obvious early on, but by the devastating ending that almost
seems not to matter.

3.0 out of 5 stars overdone fluff, but a strong supporting cast and a fairly decent storyline, December 19, 2009

"Baby Dance" is a low-budget, made-for-cable (Showtime) movie that has since been passed down to Encore, where it is in current rotation. The movie follows the fictional story of Rachel (Stockard Channing) and Wanda (Laura Dern). Rachel agrees to adopt Wanda's baby as she and her hubby Richard (Peter Riegert) desperately want a baby. The movie is very haunting in its realism because although it may look like a typical women's movie it certainly isn't because all of the charters are so raw and real and emotional. My favorite character is Rachel because we really got to know her and although she was not having the baby, the story sort of centered around her need to have a child. The movie may also shock you, as it did me. The scenes of Wanda's lifestyle were rather tragic. She lived just as dirty as the dirt road she lived on. The movie includes many melodramatic scenes which may cause you to think about the realms concerning an open adoption such as this. I found the character of Al (Richard Lineback) complex because he was a man conflicted; one minute he had a lot of rage and anger that came spilling out in all different directions and the next moment he was either silent or sensitive. I did find the scene of Al in bed, spread-eagle, naked as a jaybird totally unnecessary, but I am sure the producers threw it in to capitalize on their built-in chick audience. If you can catch the movie on Encore I recommend watching it as it's a fine character portrait. I also recomend watching the movie to anyone that's studying ethics or even family law because as the movie articulates, it takes much more than just biological lineage, not to mention money and contracts to adopt an unwanted baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars tragic and beautiful, August 11, 2006
This review is from: Baby Dance [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a beautifully-done movie about a heartbreaking situation with no easy answers. I won't spoil it for you, but this is a movie which challenges every viewer to ask themselves, "what would I do, given the same situation?"

The final scene is absolutely haunting and will stay with me for a long time. You are left with this instinctive reaction to judge the characters for their choices -- both sides, all sides -- until you stop to think, "what if it were me? What would I do?" Personally, I don't know what I would do if I were any one of those individuals. There's no 'good guy' or 'bad guy' in this one. Everyone is struggling with some life-changing choices, and my guess is that none of them will ever be the same afterwards.

Loved this movie. I can't believe it never received the press it deserved.
