Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Although the other kittens prefer proper cat games, there is nothing Baby Blue Cat loves more than romping with the gloriously grimy Dog Brothers (whose coats are so filthy they are virtually indistinguishable). After a day with the two Dogs, Baby Blue Cat is a sight, and Mama Cat orders a bath. The Dogs decide to follow suittheir first baths yield impressive results indeed. Baby Blue Cat walks the proud, now-spanking pair homewhere all three find a mud puddle that beckons irresistibly. Pryor's first book displays a childlike sensibility; the animals' exuberance in their play, their delight in the textures and feel of dust and mud, and their utter unconcern with the results are portrayed with humor and charm in black-line illustrations washed in cottonball-colored blues and pinks. A breezy debut. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 Mama Cat and her four colorful cats live next to the family of Dad Dog and the Dirty Dog Brothers. Baby Blue Cat would rather roll in the mud with the dogs than play sweet cat games with his siblings. After one particularly dirty adventure, Mama Cat bathes Blue Cat while the Dirty Dog Brothers watch with fascination. Finally they try a bath and surprise themselves, and everyone else, with their true colors. Mama Cat rewards all with a batch of cookies and an invitation to come for a bath again. Cutesiness in both the writing and the illustrations hide what potential there is in the story line. Any self-respecting child will see through the sugar coating of this ploy to take a bath and will agree with the dogs who go off to the mud puddle as if to wash off Mama Cat's sweetness. Those attracted to the simple, colorful line drawings of the cats and dogs will be overwhelmed by the text. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids' all time fav. Get dirty & clean again w/friends!, November 16, 1999
My 3 kids have worn out this book! It let's you get dirty with the baby blue cat and her buddies, the dirty dog brothers, and have fun getting clean again! My kids love the repetition,(not too much!) and the anomonpeic quality of the lines. This is a must have!
