I am ashamed, really, May 2, 2011
This review is from: Baby Doll Murders [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a pretty terrible film, even by the standards of a '90s direct-to-video "erotic" thriller, and that's primarily the fault of writer-director Paul Leder, the man responsible for the infamous "Ape" (1976) and "I Dismember Mama" (great title, lousy film). How it is that he's also the father of the very talented Mimi Leder ("Deep Impact," "The Peacemaker"), I am at a loss to explain.
So, why do I give this piece of c**p a three-star rating, you ask, when it clearly only deserves one? Two reasons, and they both belong to female star Melanie Smith, who does her only nude scene (to date) here, which is only marred by the presence of star Jeff Kober, who - to put it kindly - is not someone you want to see naked in a hot tub with someone as hot as Melanie Smith.
I became enamored of Ms. Smith when, while in college, I got hooked on the CBS soap 'As the World Turns,' in which she was starring at the time in the role of Emily Stewart. And I guess that's what I'm ashamed of - not for having a jones for Ms. Smith (any straight male would react similarly), but for wasting all that time watching a bad soap opera. (Is that an oxymoron?)

Oh Dear-What A Waste Of Talent!, April 6, 2007
This review is from: Baby Doll Murders [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Why, in heavens name, would a cast with as much talent as this one had, produce a film so? Dull is not the proper adjective to describe this, neither is cheesy, perhaps morose and vapid are the correct terminology? Yes,those fit the plot and dialogue of this sad little film to suit. The direction was just as mundane, slow paced to a snail's crawl. The sound quality was erratic and the edit, well,we just won't go there for the sake of propriety.
Now we get to the really oblique part of this film and that is the acting-atrocious! Jeff Kober was bland and blah in the lead role of Detective Louis Benz. For an actor,as talented as Kober, this is not a film to list on your credits. Kober emoted his lines like he was reading them off a milk carton. Just because the script is less than perfect,is no reason for an actor not to at least try to may them work ,in some fashion. Shame on you Mr.Kober, you could have stayed at home and phoned this one in! The rest of the cast are just a blur. Hardly worth a mention, with the exception of Melanie Smith, as Kober's girlfriend,Peggy. she was the only bright spot in this hazy mess. Don't waste your time on this one! It only gets worse from the opening credits on.........
