This is a companion for the baby shakespear video. Basically it features the poems from that video. If you bought the video with the book then don't buy this because you are waisting your money. There aren't enought bright intresting pictures in this. Also the poems are too difficult for young children to read. My son just doesn't find this intresting. This was a wasted purchase because I had this on video and a book. I didn't need it a third time. It lacked orginality. Save your money and buy a different book

I love this concept,

Who says a child can't understand this? Maybe they won't get *all* the words on their own, but it's a great way to introduce both new objects and concepts, and an early introduction to classic poetry.
My 2 year old son loves this. He loves to hear me read the poems to him, and he loves to name the objects on the pages. *I* love the idea of being able to introduce him to the classics in a manner he'll appreciate--namely through pretty pictures and association with objects that are easy for him to comprehend. We read it through together once, and he'll often turn to a few specific pages after we're done and have me read them again. It's a great way to engage with your child while still maintaining a degree of interest for adults, which is something often hard to find in children's books. And the discussion suggestions at the bottom of each page give you good ideas to keep using as your child keeps growing up as well, making sure it'll be a beloved item in our house for years to come.

Introduction to Great Poems,
By Kathy Livingston (East Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Einstein: Poems for Little Ones (Board book)
This book is a wonderful introduction to great poems. Each page has a vivid photograph of an object depicted in the poem on the facing page. Below the photo are two questions to provoke discussion. Very young children like my daughter will like to turn the pages and look at the pictures, and you may only be able to say what the object is. However, as the attention span gets longer you'll be able to read the poems to your child more often, and eventually you can even discuss the questions. We are really enjoying this book!

Perfect Introduction to Poetry,

I bought this book to read to my son when he was six months old. He loved it. It was the perfect book to use a variation of tones and to introduce words that might not be used on a daily basis. It also introduce simple concepts such as snow falling and the smell of grass. I loved the book, because it gave me a sampling of the poems I have always loved. Now I have a second child and both she and my son, who is now a toddler, enjoy the book.

Introduces Poetry to Young Children,

In "Baby Einstein: Poems for Little Ones," William Shakespeare, W. B. Yeats, Tennessee Williams, and Langston Hughes come together, with a few other poets, and beautiful photographs, in a charming board book.
The concept is simple: Each spread follows a theme. For example, a portion of a poem by Yeats about a cat is on the left, with a 't' printed in large letters. On the right is a picture of a cat. There are two questions. In this case, the child is asked about a cat' fur, and about the poem. The photos are average. Although they look like stock pictures, they are still impressive. The strength is the combination. The poems are between 4 and 12 lines. A few are by lesser known poets, but still introduce a child to the language and imagery of poetry. I fully recommend "Baby Einstein: Poems for Little Ones." Anthony Trendl editor, HungarianBookstore.com

Our 6 month old loves this book! When I show him the cover his eyes widen and he starts kicking and making noise. There's something about the cartoon character that he just loves. He enjoys looking for him in each poem, and I think he enjoys the rhythmn of the words (and I enjoy reading them outloud). We're so glad we bought it, and now we're looking for other books that feature this character!

I bought this book without having first purchased the video so maybe thats whyI like it.My son is 1 and yes the poems are to "Adult" for him to read, but he likes the colorfull pictures, and likes to hear me name the things in the pictures( apples, flowers, the moon)and today when he saw the snow outside he later opened the book to the snow page, pointed to the page and then pointed to the deck door (which is glass)and the snowy backyard! He made the connection!Give this book a chance, you and your little one might just like it.

Our daughter loves the puppet in the Baby Shakespeare video -- Bard, the Poetic Dragon. It was quite disappointing for us to discover that the character in this book is not Bard, the "star" of the Shakespeare video, but some unknown lizard character. Needless to say, the book doesn't grab our daughter's attention because she doesn't recognize that character. No wonder there's no photo of the book cover in it's listing here, on Amazon.

Not only is this a great book for my youngest child, it is great for the adults who read it.
There are sensory questions to engage each reader - questions like "How does it feel? What does it smell like?" and as a parent-reader you can go more deeply as the child grows older. The photos are amazing - nice and large - Some of the poets included are Yeats, Tennessee Williams, Shakespeare and Steve Crow - who wrote one of my favorite pieces which goes like this: "Snow is a mind falling, a continuous breath of climbs, loops, spirals dips into the eart like white fireflies"..... Not quite Mother Goose ...... and equally as beloved for your children once they are introduced to it. |
