We got this for our kid when he was about two or three months old and have used it fairly steadily since (he's just over seven months now). In general terms, it does a pretty good job of soothing him and, after countless kicks of varying magnitude, it seems to be holding up well. It's hardly a perfect product, however, and some things would likely have me reconsidering whether I'd buy it again.

Good stuff:

* Music is tolerable, though quickly redundant (it didn't take my wife or me long to be able to hum along with the playlist of classical snippets).
* The 'underwater' lighting effect is pretty cool.
* Wind-down of light and sounds is gentle and well done.
* Star button is easy for baby to smack to turn on the fun.
* Crib light function is helpful.

OK stuff:

* The remote has its own agenda and doesn't always work. When it does, it's a good thing to have. When it doesn't, it's frustrating. Partly due to what seems to be a sort of 'standby' mode (more on that below).
* Volume difference between the high and low settings on music seems more pronounced than on ocean noise.
* Speaking of which, music on loud can be pretty loud. Good if you're trying to get a screaming baby's attention, but not so great for other applications.
* The sea creatures' movements are really limited, like watching a few seconds' footage of lumbering animals on an endless loop. I find it boring, but I've had nearly forty years worth of life experience to compare it to, so maybe I'm a harsher critic than my often-engrossed kid is. Once he's seen "The Wire" and "Arrested Development," I'm sure this will hold less interest for him.

I've heard great things about this aquarium and I'm excited to give it a try. My biggest complaint so far is that it doesn't fit onto the railing of our crib. Our crib is a pretty standard size (made by Pali) so I'm very frustrated and disappointed to see that it doesn't fit. We still want to give it a try as our baby really seems to like it so we're going to find a way to make it work. My sister- and brother-in-law had the same problem with it and their crib. Another few inches of strap and this would fit perfectly. It's a HUGE oversight on the part of Baby Einstein!

One of the noisiest "Soothers" I have ever experienced. I'll take a vacuum cleaner over it any time. The music is good, but there is no fine volume control - there is "loud" and "less loud", both of which were too loud for a crib. It stopped working after about a week, and was returned for a refund.

I never review things, but thought that I should for this item. The movement and music are great, but the latch that attaches it to the crib was defective on ours. Just the weight of us pushing the button to turn it on caused the latch to fail and the whole thing fell into the crib. Thank goodness it didn't hit the baby, but we stopped using it immediately.

My daughter loved this until it started making noise after only a month. The pieces that move make this horrible squeaking noise and we cannot use this toy anymore for bedtime.

Our baby used it as an amusement to wind down toward sleep time and was quite happy with it. He even learned to hit the button to start the thing if he wanted amusement after his nap before he called out to us to come and get him. But there are some big negatives, the first of which is why I'm buying a new baby soother:

1. We've had it for 3 and half months, and when it goes into standby "auto-off" mode after some time, the motor moving the sea creatures remains on. This not only is going to burn the thing out, but it's somewhat noisy and drains the batteries even faster than normal operation, which itself drains batteries like there's no tomorrow.

2. The volume of the music is absurd. We don't even use the music, just the water sounds, as the music never let our son sleep and had a twangy sound to it that is quickly grating.

3. It requires C batteries. This may be unfair and nit-picky, but seriously, try to think of the last device you owed that used C batteries. So it's not even like you can use batteries you'd otherwise have hanging around the house. I know that having a power cord wasn't included as an option due to potential liability for choking, but it could be designed in a way that permits such an option; thereby avoiding spending over $100 on batteries over the course of months operating this thing. My TV doesn't cost that much to power.

The soothing songs on this crib-side mobile are perfect! We've used this for several months, and it does go through batteries rather quickly. I make an effort to switch it off when I go in to get him, and I think that has helped extend the battery life a bit. Our son enjoys activating the mobile, and if I don't turn it on for him when he goes to bed, he'll often turn it on himself. I like how the songs gradually decrease in loudness/speed/brightness. We haven't used the remote control at all.

The minute I opened the box, my one year old daughter loved it! This was such a relief because we were using this as a replacement for her baby mobile (which she adored as well) so we could give it to her new baby brother. She loves that she can turn the soother on by herself, using her foot to kick the orange starfish. Great buy!
