Book Description

February 27, 2007
All I can say is that I never thought it would come to this. I never thought I would run away. For some reason I thought you, of all people, would see and know.

Sheree has always been a tough girl, able to take care of herself. Then she finds herself in a situation where she can't. She needs help. She needs answers. But she can't get either from the people she she turns to -- her parents, her friends, and especially, her boyfriend, who calls her Baby Girl and treats her like she's disposable.

So who can Sheree turn to? Maybe the answer lies deep within herself, and it's truly time for her to grow up.

In a voice that rings strong ant true, debut novelist Lenora Adams tells a story that is rich, complex, and achingly real.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Young, angry, and pregnant, Sheree has run away. In a lengthy letter, she tells her mother why she left. The litany is long: her mother's smoking and sexual encounters with men, her father's absorption with his young son and wife, her friend Ange's abortion, and Damon, the 25-year-old drug dealer who has stolen her heart and self-respect. Even Austin, her high-school buddy who refuses to show romantic interest in her, gets a mention. Then Sheree's mother responds with a letter of her own, begging her daughter to return, start over, and raise her child at home. Sheree's story is an unfortunate, far-too-typical scenario of children raising children, absent fathers, and women using their bodies to gain money and power. The author worked in a homeless shelter for women, and in this powerful novel, the voices and situations ring with authenticity, and the ending is grim but honest. Frances Bradburn

Very moving and real. As a gentleman reaching towards towards the wonderful age of 60(58)I can truly relate. I have always had open and grand commications with the opposite sex and this book hits home in alot of relationships for Black America . Being from Ardmore myself and knowing the author from the time she was a youngster brings a great deal of proud. Good reading...Tommy

4.0 out of 5 stars A tough book, January 18, 2012
This review is from: Baby Girl (Paperback)
A very moving and raw book about growing up in the ghetto. This books home about what young girls have to face out here in the real world. Sharee has to face a whole lot of things growing up with her mother that lets in and out company in her house. She has been through so much. It is unreal. The way how the guys treat her, the way how her dad and mom treat her. It's all real and powerful and a fresh slap [a very hard slap] of reality.
I encourage all to read this book. Maybe you might have a fresh perspective on what it means to grow up in the streets and pretty much raise yourself.
