Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-O'Connell uses rhythmic verses and familiar sound effects to portray a busy toddler's full day. The simple, repetitive text ("The baby goes Yum/The baby goes Yum Yum/The baby goes Yum Yum Yum Yum") will appeal to the very youngest listeners. Featuring bright colors and bold, clunky shapes outlined in black, the uncluttered illustrations perfectly complement the text. The joy of this active child's explorations and the comforting presence of his/her loving mother and father will not be lost on the intended audience.

From Booklist

PreS. From playtime to mealtime, bath time to bedtime, the active toddler in this on-target picture book punctuates a day's activities with beeps, booms, splashes, and other irresistible words. Using bouncy text ("The baby goes Yum / The baby goes Yum Yum / The baby goes Yum Yum Yum Yum"), O'Connell plays on the delighted repetition and experimentation that are hallmarks of language development. Seasoned illustrator Wilson-Max, whose saturated colors and sturdy black outlines have earned him a following among toddlers and preschoolers, humorously extends O'Connell's words; in one scene, enthusiastic "beeps" inspired by a car ride are followed by impish beeps as the baby honks Dad's nose. With its exuberant mood and bold, playfully varied fonts, this celebration of noisiness makes for an ideal participatory storytime. It also gives silence its due; on the last spread, a wide-awake baby shushes itself to let tuckered-out parents catch some Zs. Jennifer Mattson

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it Again!, September 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Baby Goes Beep (Hardcover)
My toddler picked this book out himself, (I think the driving baby on the book's cover got his attention) and we read it AT LEAST seven times before the day was over.

It is about a baby in a close, loving family of a mom, a dad, a baby, and a nice gray cat. The baby has a merry, active day, "driving" a toy car in his carseat, playing with pots and pans, reading a little book, taking a bath, and doing other baby things. What makes it special is that real-life babies/toddlers who are hearing the story will recognize all the things the baby is doing as part of their day, too. The words have a nice rhythm and rhyme to them, and the pictures are bright, colorful, and detailed. My little guy liked pointing to the cat.

Sometimes, as a parent, I dread hearing "read it again!" after the fourth or fifth time I've already read a book, but this one stood up to repeated readings. Even better, the words are easy to memorize (it is kind of like a poem) so we could say lines from the book to each other even when we weren't reading. It was like a private joke.

The Baby Goes Beep has already become a favorite in my family.

The Baby Goes Beep is one of my son's favorites. He's 16 months old and loves the bouncy, rhyming text and sunshine-bright illustrations. Best of all, he loves to give the book a kiss when we get to the "baby goes smooch" page spread. This book is an excellent choice for babies and toddlers.

As a side note, this book was a Charlotte Zolotow honor book for 2004 -- the award given for the best picture book writing of the year (the Caldecott is for illustration). Kudos to O'Connell!

I bought this book for my grandson when he was a few months old, based on the reviews here. He is now almost a year old and still LOVEs it. When given a choice, he always picks The Baby Goes Beep, and I sometimes have to read it over several times in a row. The down side is that it's not interesting from an adult's point of view. In fact, my daughter refuses to read it to him any more! However, it is a must-have from baby's point of view.
