Great for baby and doesn't drive parents crazy!,
This review is from: Baby Goes New Wave (Audio CD)
We just got this cd for our 7 month old and so far she likes it. Plus we are so happy to have something we like coming through the monitors at bedtime. Instead of groaning waiting for her cd to end we find ourselves enjoying the baby version of songs we love.

Startin' 'em young with 80s music,

I saw this compilation in a store, and had to purchase it based on the song line-up alone - a lullabye version of "Enjoy The Silence??" Well.....there's another series where they took Nine Inch Nails and Green Day songs and set them to lullabye music, so I figured this wasn't too groundbreaking.
I love all of the original songs, and still I felt this was going to be cheesy and a waste of my money. Thankfully I found myself laughing WITH the music; I liked what they've done with these songs. I especially like how they've painfully replicated "Just Like Heaven" to sound like a serious lullabye. And ironically, "Video Killed The Radio Star" sounds a bit like the end of the album version of the original song (those familiar with that version will get that). Anyway, this compilation is mellow enough to get your young ones to drift off into a peaceful slumber, while at the same time putting a smile on the face of anyone from my generation (X). And subconciously indoctrinating our kids with 80s music is definitely not a bad thing. We'll have a little something to surprise our kids with when they get a little older - good thing I still have all of my vinyl from the 80s!

Great idea, horrendous execution,

I figured this would be like Bedtime with the Beatles, with soft instrumentals to lull a little one to sleep.
Instead, ALL the songs are played on bells that sounds like one of those Fisher Price xylophones. The ringing is fairly piercing. I can't imagine how a child could fall asleep to it. I wouldn't even try - it's just too annoying. The songs are great and it would have been wonderful if it had been done in a more soothing way.

Over the 19 years I've been raising kids, I have thrown out more crappy kids CDs because either the vocals sounded like somebody lined the neighbor's kids up to sing regardless of whether or not they had talent, or because the (usually female) singer sung in what amounted to overwrought yodeling-slash-patronizing baby talk. I bought this CD in Border's, did not listen to it beforehand and didn't know if it would be any good. When I put the disk in I just laughed. There are no vocals and it IS done on the xylophone but it is NOT piercing-it's interesting. My three youngest (9,6 and 1) quiet down instantly when it plays because it's distinctive and catches their attention. It is so much fun to listen to that if it comes on in the car and, for some reason my kids aren't there, I'll still find myself listening to it. I would recommend this to any parent who has heard Raffi and The Wiggles until they want to puke and are tired of the million versions of ABCs, Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush, London Bridge, I'm a Little Teapot, Wheels on the Bus, etc.
