Not as good as I had hoped,

Being pregnant with my first, I had hoped that this book would give me some insight about what to buy (and what to pass on). This book seemed to make recommendations for a LOT of items that other resources deem as unnecessary. I also purchased Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, and some items listed in there as potentially unsafe are recommended in "Baby Lists." Overall, this book seemed to be a strong marketing tool for a lot of items that would simply take up valuable space in the home. I did find some things, like recommendations for creating a birth plan and childproofing the home, to be useful, though these things can easily be found on-line. Fortunately, the book was relatively inexpensive, but I think most can find better resources for what to purchase.

Wonderful Baby Registry Resource,

This book is a well organized, comprehensive guide to what you need the first year. I like that it tells you what are necessities versus what are nice things to have, but not necessarily necessities. Also, I like the chapter on nursery accessories, things like cute drawer pulls, scented drawer liners and switch plates. Things I didn't find in other product recommending books. I also found the first section of this book really helpful. Without this book I would never have known how to create a bifth plan, stock my medicine kit or how to interview a prospective nanny. The Feeding Schedule Sheet and Emergency Phone Numbers and Safety/Health Information Sheet are another great feature in this book. It's the only book I found that told what I needed to do and what I needed to buy all in one book.

Where to begin,
This review is from: Baby Lists: What to Do and What to Get to Prepare for Baby (Paperback)
As a baby planner, former nanny, mom of 1, and someone whose used baby equipment for quite some time I found this book to be worthless (sorry I know that sounds mean and that is not at all my intention. But there are products out there that are flat out unsafe and most doctors would recommend not buying or using them such as sleep positioners. Even stating in the book that doctors recommend them (I've never read an article nor have I spoken with a pedi that recommends a sleep positioner to prevent sids the only method I've heard is back to sleep without soft things in the crib, sleep positioners while still on the market (who knows why) are one item my pedi told me on my first visit to him not to buy.She listed products that had low recommendations and are no longer on the market, yet Sony baby call monitor whom I know works well was not even listed or mentioned yet its been out since at least 2000 and has had few modifications since it was introduced. She gave quite a bit of space to fisher price who has for years (even at the time of book printing) been known to sell poor quality monitors. I thought the including of how to mix formula was silly because it's on the can of formula. Also there's alot of baby items recommended that really aren't necessary. Putting nearly every baby item under the sun wasn't helpful and made my head spin. I do like that she didn't include Evenflo or dorel (safety 1st, Quinny, cosco and eddie bauer) carseats and strollers in her book that company (dorel not evenflo) had been fined in 2000 for hiding the fact that children were hurt & even died while using their products. They didn't even recall the unsafe items that were still on store shelves and in homes already. They just re designed the items. While this was 10 years ago that this fine (which was more than 1 million dollars) their still one of the companies besides evenflo that you always hear being recalled. At least 2 of their car seat brands had car seat recalls in the last 6 months. Sad Chicco was only mentioned for it's umbrella stroller... I gave this book a one star because the only useful information can be found for free online.

I thought this would really get me organized...it didn't. Lots of stuff, but didn't really cut down to waht you really "need" so I ended up with lots of things I never used which is such a shame.

Elaine Farber has created the best consumer's guide to baby products, and as a top-notch baby nurse, she is an authority on the subject. She has really done her homework and gives you reviews and practical advice on what you need for your new baby. Great book, highly recommend.

This review is from: Baby Lists: What to Do and What to Get to Prepare for Baby (Paperback)
I'm a list person. Baby Lists is chock full of useful advice, information and recommendations in a format that's easy for a "list person" like me to understand. Baby Lists goes step by step through every baby product you could want to buy. It lists what to look for to get a safe product and gives you things to think about and consider when picking out products. It lists only the top brand choices for car seats, strollers and other big items as well as top choices for small items such as health care products, bath time products and products for nursing mothers. Unlike many books that give general information Baby Lists gives specific information about each product. It's a very hands on type of book, packed with lots of essential information and things to think about both before and after your baby arrives. If you're expecting or need a great prebaby shower gift this book is definitely worth checking out.

What a Helpful Resource,

Being a first time parent I was looking for a book that was easy to read, got right to the point and gave me the basic information I needed to get ready for my baby. Baby Lists tells you about all the everyday, practical things you'll need for your baby. No fancy, expensive products just well known brand names that most people are already familiar with. Baby Lists is kind of like a work book. I went through the book chapter by chapter. As I shopped or registered for my baby shower I just checked everything off and knew that it was done. I especially liked the chapters on how to interview a pediatrician and questions to ask when taking my hospital tour. There were so many things I would never have thought to ask. I'm so happy I found this book. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful Book Especially for First Time Parents,
By AshleyM (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Lists: What to Do and What to Get to Prepare for Baby (Paperback)
What a wonderful book, especially for first time parents. I didn't have a clue of what I needed to do or what I needed to get before my baby was born. This book has it all. Not only does it recommend mommy endorsed products, great established brands that most people are familiar with, but it also gives you lists, like the title suggests, of things you need to do before the baby arrives. Lists on how to interview a pediatrician, what to ask when you take your hospital tour, what to pack for the hospital and so much more. Because I had this book I was so prepared when my baby arrived. I used it for everything. It's the only book I used for myu baby registry. I didn't have to spend hours searching the internet because everything is all spelled out for you in the book. It made getting ready so easy. I highly recommend this book.Ashley |
