Cord McKnight doesn't understand why his wife left him, they were having problems in their marriage, but not enough to have her leave without a word from her and file for a divorce.
Ashley is very insecure, she was an orphan, and from not having a family she has a extremely low self esteem.
Cord's step-mother Sheila is so determined to be Cord's lover, she is willing to lie, cheat, steal and even break up his marriage to have him.
But everytime she thinks she has done enough to get Cord to be with her, he slips through her fingers. But Sheila finds Ashley an easy target to tell lies to her, so she can hurt her over and over. Until one day Sheila is in Cord's room after he has been with Ashley, and she looks like she just came out of the ensuite shower. She yells for Cord to come back to bed, but in reality Cord isn't even in the house.
The thing is Cord trusts Ashley even though he was told by a doctor he couldn't have children, he never questions who the father of Ashley's baby is.
