Someone just gave this to me.....It's a well-organized, comprehensive guide to what you need the first year. Very well written. I like that it tells you what you DON'T need to buy, as well as what you should splurge on. Lots of real-mom advice. It's more than a product guide--it tells you how to pick stuff out, what features are important, what brands are reliable, etc. I love Parenting Magazine--they've put together a terrific book.

Since I'm pregnant with my first child, I was having a difficult time deciphering what we truly need for when the baby arrives. I found this book to be a good place to start, with explanations of various "baby equipment" that I didn't even know existed. Who knew babies need all this stuff? I also recommend using [...] to find more ratings on the items that are discussed in this book.

I really enjoyed seeing what items other parents recommend. It is helpful since there are so many choices out there. I do find the Consumer Reports book a little more helpful since it has ratings, but like being able to compare the two.

I wasn't real impressed with this book. It wasn't a bad start but I had already ready Baby Bargains which I thought was MUCH better at actually pointing out what is more practical and also rated all the different brands. This book is more just common sense like listing all the types of furniture a baby can sleep in. But it didn't address practicality of one over the other or safety concerns of one over the other. It does have some nice tips here and there. But I honestly didn't even make it halfway through before I stopped reading it so maybe I shouldn't write a review but I feel its worth warning others that they may find other books more useful. Instead I take Baby Bargains shopping with me in order to help me make my purchases.

I found this book to have a lot of great colorful pictures but not enough product diversity or information. I found Baby Bargains to be the best consumer report book and Baby Lists to be the best all around registry resource and how to prepare book.

As some other reviewers have noted, this book doesn't offer a lot of information about specific brands of products or specific recommendations for that matter. I would have liked that. And as a first-time parent, I would have appreciated more in terms of suggested lists. On the plus side, I did find a couple of helpful hints that we'll use and liked that it gives good guidance regarding what to look for in products (but I think you find comparable information through an internet search). I wish I had heard about the Baby Bargains book earlier - from what I've heard from other parents, that is more along the lines of what I needed.

A good initial reference with nice photos of products. This in no way is a comprehensive list or review of products but a good way to get started. I was given this book as a gift and probably would not have purchased for myself.

This book has nice color photos and is small and portable -- perfect for thumbing through while waiting at the doctor's office; however, it doesn't have a whole lot of information about specific brands of products. For that, I recommend the Baby Bargains book.

This book was alright. Definitely not a must have for second or more time parents. I thought it left a lot out and would choose a different book.

I am not a first-time mom, if I were I may have found this book more informative. I would stick to Consumer Reports Best Baby Products - then you will not only feel like you are making good choices but very responsible ones. I felt like Parenting's version was sometimes contradictory to what was safe and good for your baby. And don't get me wrong - I love Parenting magazine, but their book left me disappointed.
