Another Winner from the Baby Name Experts,
By Endyblue (Pacific Northwest) - See all my reviews

With six children, Satran & Rosenkratz' book Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana: What To Name Your Baby Now has been my favorite resource for coming up with names for our children. Now that I'm pregnant with our seventh, I thought to come see if they had a newer version of this book available and found The Baby Name Bible! I ordered it immediately and wasn't disappointed.
In their above-mentioned book, the authors didn't deal with providing a dictionary of baby names -- in this book they do, along with meanings and origins of names. Their dictionary is comprehensive (but not OVERLY so, so that it's hard to wade through the names), it's fresh, it's interesting and it's funny. But also included in this book -- and what I liked about BJJMM -- are their category lists; lists that help provide the FEEL of the name (things like "If you like Adam, You Might Also Like ...," "Color Names," "Cool Bible Names" and "Star Baby Names." This book gets a high recommendation from me.

I enjoyed how this book told me what names were "climbing the charts" and vice versa. The "celebrity baby name" sections are very interesting, as are the "if you like XXX, you might like XXX" sidebars. It has some funny commentary now and then. I think it could do without the downright silly -- like listing "50 Cent" as a name! -- but overall it's a fun name book to read through, and makes a good gift for any expecting parent.

The Baby Name Bible was easy to pick out of the many books of this genre since the cover is so engaging. Upon reading it, I was very relieved to find that, rather than having to plow through name after name in this very substatial volume, I felt as though I were being guided by an old friend who loves everything about naming a new baby and wants me to be just as delighted with the final choice. This is a great gift book!

A lot of names to sort through,
This review is from: The Baby Name Bible: The Ultimate Guide By America's Baby-Naming Experts (Paperback)
Pros: Comprehensive book of names, gives origins, meanings and trends for some of the names along with many variations of a particular name. Many different lists throughout the book: international versions of names, nicknames, and the one I thought was useful -- If you like XXXXX, you might like the names.....
Cons: Comprehensive book of names--there were just too many names to sort through. We are looking for a more traditional name and there are too many pages of names that were just too "out there" for us.

Just what I wanted!!!,

This was exactly what I was looking for! Gathering names is one of my favorite hobbies and I have been looking for a book with a wide variety of names, but nothing too out there. I wanted the old favorites to be in there, plus a few off the wall that I hadn't heard of, and that was exactly what I got. Male and female names are split into different sections which I like, and the little extras the authors provide every few pages or so, like "Star Babies Names", and "If you like Bridget, you might like..." are very fun and idea-stimulating. I did some extensive research for the names book I was looking for, and this one is definitely just right!

As a self-proclaimed "name geek" and collector of baby name books, I list this among my top 5 favorite baby name books. No, it does not include definitions and origins for every name, but that is what the majority of other books do. This book however, provides expert opinions. Really, knowing that a name means "noble worlf" is not near as important as knowing that it will always be associated with a horrific ruler (or perhaps a not-so-pleasant word...or whatever else you can think of). It also helps some to know where the world is in their naming style. Is the world ready for Lois to come back...probably not. But, they seem to be ready for other old-fashioned favorites.

Got this for an excellent price as it was used. That did not bother me and the book turned out to be very comprehensive. I was able to make my top 10 list of names from the excellent variety of names in the book. I highly recommend this book.

A Fun Name Book - Where We Found OUR Sons Name!,

This review is from: The Baby Name Bible: The Ultimate Guide By America's Baby-Naming Experts (Paperback)
This book was a lot more fun and complete than other baby name books. This is where we picked our new 3 week old son's name (Colton). The definitions and descriptions for names in this book are humorous and accurate, and the book has a "key" for names on the rise, decline, or are unisex. A great resource. If you're going to get only one baby name book, this is the one!

Entertaining the road of sooo many options,

I have used and am using this book for naming my children. It's not your typical list of names, meanings and origins (But they do include that information also). There are author comments that are pretty amusing and sometimes helpful and give the book an actual read. After going through soooo many names, it's nice to have something to actually read, even if you may not always agree. They also break it up a bit by adding mini name lists within the pages (You can even hunt them down in the table of contents). There's also indications of raising and falling popularity, unisex, author favorites and spelling alternatives. The font won't hurt your eyes and the names are spaced enough so you won't get lost on the page. My favorite baby name book for years to come!
