what happens when a wish for a baby comes true?, October 21, 2006

Three friends celebrating their Leap Year birthday in New Orleans make one wish each on an old lamp, never believing it will actually change their lives forever.
Rachel Manning has had bad luck in love. All she really wants is the unconditional love of a child for its mother. This is her wish. Imagine her surprise when this wish comes true in an unlikely way. Now, Rachel is temporary guardian to the new baby of a young friend of hers.
Jake Fletcher is legal guardian to baby Emma since his brother is the father. He is furious the mother usurped his control by turning Emma over to Rachel. Now the two are at odds, both unwilling to relinquish their duty as guardian. So they compromise, spending half the time at Rachel's apartment, the other half at cowboy Jake's ranch.
Sparks are sure to fly when Rachel and Jake discover they want a different kind of partnership... as a couple.
Though Baby, Oh Baby! was a cute story, it really doesn't stand out from other books for me in any way. It was a theme done so many times that I don't know if there is much that can be done to make this one shine. I loved the premise of three wishes made on a magic lamp but that is such a minor part of the story arc it's barely even mentioned. I purchased this trilogy for the light paranormal bend of the magic lamp, so I was disappointed how little mention it got.
Rachel is stubborn and determined. She is unwilling to break her promise to the baby's mother, which causes quite a bit of tension between her and Jake. I liked that she would not renege on her promise for anything and we find out by the end of the story why this is so important to her.
Unfortunately, I thought Jake was a little too overbearing. He comes crashing in to Rachel's life, determined to take over. He is however, totally enraptured by baby Emma, so he redeems himself for me to some extent with that. Once his story is fully revealed by the end of the book, we understand why he is so determined to have his way where the baby is concerned. Rachel is the perfect complement to him, her determination and unwavering loyalty temper his domineering behavior.
