1) It's not a monkey
2) the strap comes out the bottom so no child strangulation.
3) the strap pulls back into the car so it's compact
4) He loves that it's a car and that there is a pocket just big enough for me to shove a kleenex or small snack in for him to find
1) My kid is smallish - 18/24 months in clothing 2.5 in age so it isn't snug to him and kinda hangs on him loosely (not a deal breaker)
2) When we "need" it because he's pulling away and running every where he really really tugs on the thing. I'm noticing that the little plastic part that the leash comes out of/goes into is starting to pull through the hole. I think this type of wear is inevitable with a 2 year old tugging with their full body force and this plastic piece being inside of a plush toy car. So I'll fix it, but just be aware.
It is the cutest thing though, and even when my son is pulling with all his might to escape, the end result is that he asks for the leash handle, not for me to take the car off. He actually loves wearing the thing. When going on walks around the neighborhood I've found that the leash is long enough that he can run around, but it keeps him out of the street as it seemed to be "just right. That was nice when he went through the run into the street phase.
It did come with a zipper though so you can keep your one wedged hot wheel safe as opposed to being an open index card holder like the more mainstream animal harnesses.
But if you're not in it for the backpack use, it doesn't matter. It's a cute elephant and kids love elephants.
I tried it on my 27 lb 2.5 year old twice and adjusted all the way. The fit is safe but looks saggy. Not a big deal. But I don't think it'd be a good fit for younger toddlers or skinny kids.
What makes these different from most other harnesses is the ease and discretion of the retractable tether (aka leash).
When I finally caved and decided I could use one of these things for safety's sake, I thought they should be made with retractable tether. So this grabbed my attention.
The "discretion" of this is nice for those worried about dirty looks or someone taking a picture of their "leashed" child to post on the internet later and laugh at. Cause unless you pull out the leaf, it just looks like your kid is wearing an animal for cutesies. So that's good. And if your kid considers it a leash or restraint, they might hate it less while in plain stuffed animal mode.
The not great of it is that since it's retractable, it's very thin which makes me question if it'd be sturdy enough for long term use. Especially if you have a kid who would fight this as hard as he fights the car seat, grocery cart seat, stroller, baby carrier or being held by mom when he just wants to run. Can't say for sure it wouldn't last, but I didn't wanna wait and find out as well as be out $27 for a little elephant head.Read more ›
The twins have worn these backpacks multiple times- to the zoo, amusement parks and other public, crowded places- but I never once had to use the retractable "leash" feature until just recently when on a road trip, we stopped at a rest area on I-95, and while still taking one twin out of her car seat, the other twin (who was standing between my legs and the car door) darted towards the busy parking lot. I was extremely fortunate enough to have her panda's "bamboo" in my hand and she was only able to take 2 steps before she was restrained from stepping out further into the path of a speeding SUV.
So while I still do not like seeing children on "leashes", these are a discreet way of having that extra security just in case.

I love this, the leash part is retractable so it looks like a backpack when the kid is just wearing it.Published 8 months ago by Jocilyn E. Dellava
