This book and DVD were all we needed to teach our daughter sign language. It was easy to read and follow. The ideas and methods make sense and we've had a blast with it. We gave it to her daycare providers so they could get involved as well. We started teaching her signs at 10 mos. She is now 14 mos and signs regularly. She loves to use her signs and you can tell how tickled she is that she can communicate to use without just pointing and whining. Great product!

This is a perfect starter set to teach your baby sign. It has the right amount of detail, going into what steps to take to set yourself up for success, and what pitfalls to avoid. The first half of the book is an easy guide on how to teach your baby sign, the second half of the book is a dictionary/index with the words and pictures of how to sign them. The DVD is pretty basic, the most helpful being an index of all the words -- you can select the word and it shows you a video of someone doing the actual sign which is a nice supplement to the pictures in the book. Based on reviews, I purchased on Amazon the "Sign Babies ASL Flash Cards, Set One: First Words" also, and they are great. They are not laminated but I got them laminated at FedEx Kinkos for $10 and that has been a perfect supplement to this book. Highly recommended!

Remember how you learned about the mantra "practice, practice, practice," in school, sports, music, dance, etc. - you name your own childhood activity?? ... Well, it's true....repetition creates awesome results. Reading this book will give you all the skills you need to know to teach your baby/child how to communicate at an early age. It takes practice and repetition, of course, but don't all good things in life require this....plus a little patience? :o)

Monta Briant's book is really a lifesaver when it comes to combating toddler frustration! My 8 month-old son started with the sign 'fan', and now at 17 month-old son is really starting to 'blossom' with his signing skills. He recently started taking a keen interest in Monta's flashcards too. Particularly the photos of her signing, which he always ignored before! It is really exciting to see his signing vocabulary growing along with his new, increased hand-eye coordination. Ms. Briant is incredibly gifted at helping parents communicate with our kiddos! If you don't believe in baby sign language....doubt no more, just try it and you will be surprised!!

We have bought several books about signs for hearing babies and this one by Monta Z Briant is soooooo gooooood!
It has a very interesting part with the rationale behind teaching babys to sign and a very complete section with vocabulary very well explained.
From all the others we got this is our favorite. We havent had the chance to check the DVD but even with just using the book we find it totally useful.

I would highly recommend this DVD/book. Monta makes signing fun and the DVD is educational for parent as well as child. My 15 month old is already using about 30 signs in a matter of weeks. The ability to do so has cut down on the communication gap frustration. I let my mom and sister watch the DVD and all kids in the area sat down (which rarely happens), absolutely intrigued. Two Thumbs Up!

I loved this book. And the DVD. I am a novice at ASL and I really want my Bby Girl to learn and understand me and me understand her. Thanks for this I have to get the sing along version.

Starting sign language with my 6 month old and this book has alot in it- pictures, how to sign stuff and the DVD. I love it!!!!

I have just started to use this, so cannot comment much about the efficacy of sign language and our baby. But it is researched well and looks promising. However, a review of the book and DVD: The book is easy to read and understand, has a decent list of symbols, and is made even easier to grasp with the DVD.
There seem to be many ASL apps with numerous signs on them that I think will go very well with this book. The app for this book doesn't seem the best - more limited than others.
The book made signing with basic ASL for babies much easier than I had expected.

I ended up getting this instead of the slew of other sign language DVD's although they were highly ranked. I am happy with the purchase because it covers all I need to help my LO communicate her basic needs to me. I can limit her media watching time and still get a learning session in followed by reinforcement by me throughout the day.

This book is great for starting out signing with your baby. It is informative but brief. There are great pictures showing and explaining how to make the signs and if you need to see how to do it the video shows you. The video actually has most of the info from the book, if you want to skip the reading :)
