About the Author

Monta Briant, and her husband, Paul, began signing with their daughter, Sirena, when she was six months old. The family eventually learned hundreds of signs together. In 2001, Monta, a former professional yacht captain, decided to make a permanent career change that would enable her to stay home with her daughter, so she founded Baby Sign Language Workshops. An enthusiastic speaker and self-proclaimed “baby sign language evangelist,” Monta teaches baby sign language workshops and parent-tot signing classes throughout San Diego County. Baby Sign Language Workshops classes have been the subject of feature stories in the San Diego Union-Tribune and on Fox 6 News.

More About the Author

Monta Zelinsky Briant, a 7th generation native of San Francisco, moved to San Diego in 1998 with husband Paul Briant (of Cape Town, South Africa) in order to find more affordable housing, more sunshine, and start a family.

In 2000, Monta and Paul welcomed their first child, Sirena, into the world, and soon began signing with her. Signing with Sirena was such and amazing experience for Zelinsky-Briant family, that Monta felt compelled to share signing with other families, and began teaching classes in 2001. The classes eventually caught the attention of Hay House Publishing, and Monta's first book, Baby Sign Language Basics: Early Communication for Hearing Babies and Toddlers (Hay House 2004), quickly became the best-selling book on the topic, being published in a half dozen foreign language editions as well. In 2004, when the family welcomed a little brother, Aiden, to the family, big sister Sirena was a big help teaching her new brother signs!

Both children have outgrown signing as a primary means of communication, but they still remember most of their signs, and continue to find them useful in a variety of situations. Nowadays, Monta get's her baby-signing-fix with the little signers in her classes. "It always seems like a miracle every time a tiny baby does a new sign in class-- even though I've seen it thousands of times now, I get just as excited as the parents do!" says Monta. "I always walk out of every class I teach absolutely walking on air-- it's the most fulfilling job in the world".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ASL flash cards!, July 16, 2007
By
E. Tidwell (Bellevue, WA USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck (Cards)
I love these flash cards. We started signing with my daughter when she was 5 months old; she did her first signs back at 10 months; now she's 18 months and still going strong with signing. We do not allow her to watch TV so we're reliant on what we can teach her, board books (which are mostly poorly designed when it comes to babies or very young toddlers), and now, these cards.

I LOVE these cards! The cards and big and fairly sturdy, and the words presented are a very good selection for babies. Here's how they are designed:

-- One one side, each card has a clear, colorful picture of the object being signed about, often with a baby (for example, "Light" shows a young toddler turning on a lamp).

-- On the back side, there is a picture of a woman performing the sign, and if needed, a brief text description of how to do the sign.

-- All cards show the ASL sign. A couple also show popular alternates for signs that are particularly difficult for babies, such as "help".

-- The word for each sign is printed in large, clear block letters on both sides of the card.

I have looked at tons and tons of board books and not been completely happy with any of them. but I love, love, LOVE these cards. They are wonderfully designed to be clear and attractive to very young signers, and are study enough that babies and toddlers can play with them without causing too much damage. My daughter has knelt or crawled on some of them more than once and they haven't really even been dented yet.

These cards definitely deserve two thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Sturdy cards!, July 4, 2007
This review is from: Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck (Cards)
I purchased these cards over a different brand after reading all of the reviews about having to laminate the other cards. I think that these cards are plenty sturdy enough. My infant has put them in her mouth quite a bit and it is easy just to wipe them clean when she is done. They are very nice large cards with great pictures that my daughter gets very excited about and the explanation of how to do the sign is very easy to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better, January 29, 2009
This review is from: Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck (Cards)
I think that the 50 words chosen are adequate for a beginner's set, but the images could be much better. For instance, the image for "telephone" has a baby holding a cellphone to his ear. The baby seems unnecessary and distracts from the subject (which is very small in comparison). This occurs in maybe 20% of the set, so I am not using those cards. I have not seen other sets out there, but I think it is important that the subject image be very simple and clear.
