Great ASL flash cards!,
By
This review is from: Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck (Cards)
I love these flash cards. We started signing with my daughter when she was 5 months old; she did her first signs back at 10 months; now she's 18 months and still going strong with signing. We do not allow her to watch TV so we're reliant on what we can teach her, board books (which are mostly poorly designed when it comes to babies or very young toddlers), and now, these cards.
I LOVE these cards! The cards and big and fairly sturdy, and the words presented are a very good selection for babies. Here's how they are designed: -- One one side, each card has a clear, colorful picture of the object being signed about, often with a baby (for example, "Light" shows a young toddler turning on a lamp). -- On the back side, there is a picture of a woman performing the sign, and if needed, a brief text description of how to do the sign. -- All cards show the ASL sign. A couple also show popular alternates for signs that are particularly difficult for babies, such as "help". -- The word for each sign is printed in large, clear block letters on both sides of the card. I have looked at tons and tons of board books and not been completely happy with any of them. but I love, love, LOVE these cards. They are wonderfully designed to be clear and attractive to very young signers, and are study enough that babies and toddlers can play with them without causing too much damage. My daughter has knelt or crawled on some of them more than once and they haven't really even been dented yet. These cards definitely deserve two thumbs up.

Nice Sturdy cards!,
This review is from: Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck (Cards)
I purchased these cards over a different brand after reading all of the reviews about having to laminate the other cards. I think that these cards are plenty sturdy enough. My infant has put them in her mouth quite a bit and it is easy just to wipe them clean when she is done. They are very nice large cards with great pictures that my daughter gets very excited about and the explanation of how to do the sign is very easy to understand.

Could be better,

I think that the 50 words chosen are adequate for a beginner's set, but the images could be much better. For instance, the image for "telephone" has a baby holding a cellphone to his ear. The baby seems unnecessary and distracts from the subject (which is very small in comparison). This occurs in maybe 20% of the set, so I am not using those cards. I have not seen other sets out there, but I think it is important that the subject image be very simple and clear.

The basics with real pictures and simple directions,

I wanted simple sign language cards to teach my baby to communicate some basic things to me (such as she is tired, hungry, wants more, wants a drink, needs help). That's it. These accomplish that, plus many more. Also, I have noticed from reading her books that my baby prefers actual pictures, rather than cartoon drawings, so I wanted to find sign language flash cards with real pictures. These are all actual pictures, no drawings.
The directions on the cards for signing are very simple. My husband and I went through them together a few times and we have almost every sign down. Here are the signs we use the most: eat, drink, milk, water, more, bath, sleep, sun, moon, rain, swing, girl, and boy. While I am at it, here are some others: airplane, car, train, swing, rain, snow, stars, cracker, cookie, bird, flower, hat, cow, bunny, pig, cat, dog, and help. These cards can handle a splash of water, but aren't something you would want to hand to your baby, as he/she would probably ruin them. Finally, I appreciate that on the "milk" card, there is a picture of a bottle of milk AND a baby nursing. I nurse my baby so "milk" to her means "to nurse." And yes, the picture is completely tasteful.

Best Deck,

I was given the whole kit, but want to be sure to mention these cards are GREAT. My daughter has enjoyed them from 3 mo and continues to use them at 16 mo! She's not big on signing, but these cards are fabulous for having fun saying first words. Worthwhile! ...And a lot less expensive than other similar card sets.

Well designed but lacking some main words,

I just started signing with my 9 month old daughter in the last month or so. I bought these cards because I thought they would be helpful to both me and her, as well as any other family members who would like to help teach her. We can work on just a few signs at a time and the pictures on the cards will help her recognize them. My only complaint is that there are way too many nouns/objects that I don't feel she needs to learn right now. I'd like to focus on the actions we use every day like "all done/finished", "diaper change", "up" (to be held), "no", "don't touch", "I love you" and none of those are in this deck. So the only ones in the deck that we use right now are "more", "cat", and "milk" which may be confusing when she starts weaning since she is breastfed and sometimes just wants to nurse for comfort.

These could definitely use some editing.Images seem to distract and are not necessary; better pictures could've been used. There are about 15 cards that my 8 month old can learn; the rest are gratuitous; do I need my son to know the sign for horse? plane? NO, I WANT him to know mom (missing), tired (missing), love (missing), TV (missing), teddy bear (missing). Make your own cards; it will serve you better.

I thought that the cards were sturdy enough (a laminated version of a playing card) and that the pictures demonstrated how to sign and what the objects were clearly. At this point, my daughter likes to eat the cards more than look at them. I wish that the deck concentrated more on conversational items such as "all done" or "more"...there are a few of these in the stack, but other things like "bird" and "duck" (which are the same sign...so a little redundant), were included instead. A little pricey for what you get.

Good Value - Quality Product,

These cards are durable, easy to understand, and a good value for the cost. They have been fun for us parents to learn, our son is too young yet, but we wanted to get comfortable with them first.

I bought this item as a gift and I am assuming it went well because our niece does sign a little at 18 months!
