5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
As an ASL teacher and new grandmother, I've been looking for the perfect resource for my son and his wife to use with their new baby. After looking through MANY books, I found this one to be the BEST: Baby Signing 1 -2-3 by Nancy Cadjan. This is an EXCELLENT book, with tons of (accurate) info about ASL and Deaf culture, which I haven't seen in any other book like this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Information is organized poorly
This book has good tips and information. However, the first 2 chapters are spent trying to convince you why signing is good for your baby. Well, I had already decided I was going to sign with my baby, so these chapters were useless. As you read the book they talk about signs you can introduce to your baby. However, they only show the illustration for a few signs as they...

This is an EXCELLENT book, with tons of (accurate) info about ASL and Deaf culture, which I haven't seen in any other book like this. Cadjan also discusses child language development, and what kind of signing you can expect a child to understand and initiate at different age levels. The book also contains a clear ASL dictionary by content areas, which is another unique feature. This is a SUPER resource! Make sure THIS is the book you get!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners with infants OR older children!, November 4, 2007
This review is from: Baby Signing 1-2-3: The Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide for Every Stage and Every Age (Paperback)
Because I didn't start teaching my son ASL when he was an infant, I thought all hope was lost! Then I was introduced to this book and to my complete shock and amazement, not only is it NOT too late for my 4 year old to start learning, but he can enjoy the book as much as I do!

This book is composed in such a way that you can follow it though any child's stages of personal development. Even those with mental or physical challenges can use this book with the help of one chapter's advice on how to modify the learning process.

The first half of the book is very comprehensive by teaching the parent what parts of ASL to introduce at various stages and the back of the book is arranged by signs at those same stages.

I can't wait to use this with our next child, but for now, my four year old and I are enjoying learning this together. The second half of the book is illustrated so that he can understand as well as I can!

I highly recommend this book to parents with infants or older children. I now know that it is NEVER too late to learn American Sign Language!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Baby Signing 1-2-3: The Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide for Every Stage and Every Age (Paperback)
I've looked through other signing books and this is by far the best. I even have a friend who is a speech pathologist that works with infant to 3 year olds, she uses this book. Tons of signs in the books and they are easy to understand and teach. My son is 20 months and picked up a couple of signs the first week I started using them. Each week he adds to his "signing vocabulary."

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to follow, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Baby Signing 1-2-3: The Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide for Every Stage and Every Age (Paperback)
this book is easy to follow and learn. It has great tips for everyday signing with your baby. I only wish the signs were easier to find or on the same page. The dictionary is not alphabetical and so when I need to find a sign I have to look in the index to find the page the sign is on.

I have been working with my baby showing her signs since she was a few weeks old. I first saw this book at Books a million and was just really excited about the layout of the book and how they walk you through each stage of their development and let you know which signs are best for using at certain ages. Really helps a newbie like me be more effective with my signing efforts. I'm really excited about seeing my baby make progress. This book is great for those completely new to sign language and parenting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, February 6, 2012
This review is from: Baby Signing 1-2-3: The Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide for Every Stage and Every Age (Paperback)
I got this as a shower gift before my son was born. Now, at almost 2, he has learned lots of different signs. It makes life so much easier, as he is still learning how to communicate using words and his voice. He is able to sign for some things that he can't yet say, but many things he will speak and sign at the same time. Friendly, conversational reading style. I highly recommend this compared to the other ASL books I considered.

I just loved this book.

It's really simple and easily digestible, yet it's full of great information as well as signing instructions. This is for the beginner, so there aren't tons and tons of signs, but it includes the basics that you would need to get started. The drawings of the signs are pretty straightforward, and there is a description of how to do the movement of the sign under many of them.

I have been signing to my son since he was just shy of 2 months old (though the book suggests to start at 4 months) and now at 3 months he is already responding to "milk," "bath," "all done," and "up." He's not signing back yet, but it's nice to see him light up when I do the signs for the things he likes!

This book is also great because it uses American Sign Language, so if you want to sign a word not in the book it's pretty easy to find online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for any parent - a decision you won't regret, November 12, 2011
This review is from: Baby Signing 1-2-3: The Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide for Every Stage and Every Age (Paperback)
Having spent years working with hearing-impaired children, I decided to use baby signs with my own hearing daughter after listening to Babies and Moms Radio, which was created by the author of this book. The book, Baby Signing 1-2-3, is easy to read, organized and offers a variety of signs in the back of the book. It is divided so that a parent can read a different chapter for the child's corresponding age range. Of all the parenting books I own, this one has been read and referenced the most. Signing takes time and a little patience, but the payoff is worth it!! I encourage all new parents and expecting parents to pick up this book. It'd be a great baby shower gift too.

This book has good tips and information. However, the first 2 chapters are spent trying to convince you why signing is good for your baby. Well, I had already decided I was going to sign with my baby, so these chapters were useless. As you read the book they talk about signs you can introduce to your baby. However, they only show the illustration for a few signs as they write about them. As the book progresses they rarely illustrate the sign that is being discussed. You have to look up the sign in the back. The sign dictionary in the back isn't organized in a fashion that matches the chapters. I'm sure there are other baby sign books out there that are better organized and easier to work with.

When my daughter was not speaking at the right time frame, her speech therapist told me to try to teach her baby sign language. So we tried it. And it worked!!! She learned over 40 words with lots of practice and patient. Easy to use and a great guide. Loved it!
