I love the DVD set Baby Signing Time by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman, but my daughter and I were ready for more words. Since there are only two DVDs out so far, we needed another resource. This book is great! The first third of this book is broken into the following chapters:
1. A Quick Course in Baby Signing 2. Sign Language Development 3. Signing with Your Young Baby (0-6 mos) 4. " (6-12 mos) 5. " (12-18 mos) and so on through 3 years Also included "Signing with Your Special Needs Child" and "How to Sign and Sing." (Classic songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, "Old MacDonald" and "The Wheels on the Bus"; and ones that are put to classic songs but that help reinforce your sign-vocab like the "Change Your Diaper Song" put to "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain.") The rest of the book is a picture dictionary of words you will want to use when communicating with your child. Pretty much every word I have looked up in order to sing nursery songs is there. Sometimes I look for a word and it isn't there, but this doesn't happen often. And these are usually words that are not specifically geared for the little guys. It makes me hopeful that there will be a part two one day. The pictures are very helpful and clearly drawn and labeled. I keep it in my nursery and refer to it whenever I am talking to my daughter and don't have a "key word" in my sign language knowledge. If you are looking to get started with sign language, I recommend the DVDs I mentioned at the beginning AND this book.

I am an RN, my daughter is 9 months old, I have been using this book in addition to the Signing Times DVD's , it is great, easy to understand, and well organized. It is actually based on ASL, not improvised signs, my baby already knows about 5 signs, and attempts her own versions of them too.My 6 year has taken an interest in teaching her baby sister as well

I love this book. It has so much information and so many signs. Also I always think that it is hasrd to tell how to do a sign by looking at the picture and this also walks you through the steps of making the sign as well as the picture. I think this is the best baby sign book I have seen.

Comprehensive, signs sometimes hard to understand,
This review is from: The Baby Signing Book: Includes 350 ASL Signs for Babies and Toddlers (Paperback)
As an English speaking parent in Switzerland, we liked the idea of ASL. The book is very comprehensive and well set up, the only negative for me is that the signs are not always super clear, and you have to guess a little sometimes.
Still, it is definatly reccommendable and I would buy it again

I love the Baby Signing Book. Love the games and songs in it, and I especially like that it's ASL, not "baby sign."

We purchased several signing books to learn signs to teach our new baby and this one has become the favorite of the family. The visuals are great and easy to understand. The explinations are clear and easy to relate to the family - children and hubby alike. The journal aspect has proven to be one of my favorites as it allows you to note when you introduce the sign to the baby and when they first use it back to you.

Lots of fun if you're willing to do some reading!,

I think this is a good book to start out with if you just want to teach some basic signs. It has lots of pictures and explains the how/why of teaching sign language to babies. It did feel like a lot of reading for something that didn't need that in-depth of an explanation, though. I started to get frustrated when I wanted to know the sign for something in particular and it wasn't in this book, but the book doesn't advertise itself as an unabridged dictionary of signs.
I tried teaching my son starting around 3 months as suggested, but no real progress with it until 6-9 months, so I will wait until then with my next child. My son is now 2 and he has really great language skills--huge vocabulary. He still signs for "please" and a few other things, but I think the reason he vocalizes so many words is that he learned them through signing first.

My little boy loves the pictures, and after 2 weeks my two year old, one year old and I have all learned about 20 signs and haven't needed one that isn't in the book yet.

I took ASL in college (many years ago) so I was interested in a book that would refresh and clear away some of the cob webs of the past instead of starting over with all new signs. I really like the book. I find it easy to follow and good explanations of the signs. It's organized well. My daughter is only 5 months old so I am using it to get me familiar with the signs and doing them so the real testamony will be when I see her doing them!

Good Starter, Basic with ASL Signs,

I bought this to start signing with my son. It covers the basics and allows you to start signing without a lot of reading. It is broken down into sections by age and says you can start signing from birth. The best part is it is ASL so I am learning and teaching ASL, not my own made up signs. It got me started which is great and we'll see if and when my LO picks it up..fingers crossed!
