2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Again
I bought this for my two year old. He has aproxia of speech so we are teaching him sign language. I thought it was simple enough to keep his attention but the signs are not correct. I do not want to teach him the wrong signs because he may never be able to communicate like most of us do. I was disappointed to say the least. This was the second book I bought from this line...

5.0 out of 5 stars Communicating With Babies Has Never Been Easier, September 12, 2005
This review is from: Baby Signs for Bedtime (Board book)
People have asked me, "Why do you want your babies to learn sign language? They aren't deaf, are they?" Anyone who has children between the ages of 8 and 20 months can tell you that babies understand a lot more than they can express in words. While all they may say is "ma-ma-ma-ma" or "da-da-da-da," they comprehend so much of the language and activity going on around them! Watch the way your baby plays - watch the way she uses her hands and facial expressions to repeat the things you've done with her when you played the day before. Does your baby wave "bye-bye?" She's already using sign language to communicate. Watch the way your baby responds when the phone rings at your house. Sometimes baby will put his hand to his cheek and pretend to say a wordless "Hello," right? That's the sign for "telephone." Babies can "talk" with their bodies before they can use verbal communication. These terrific little books provide tools for babies to use in communicating, months before the words come forth! Sometimes it is easy to see that baby is frustrated by the inability to communicate a desire - imagine if your 12 month old could express, "I'm crying because I want some more to drink," in two simple signs, "more + drink."

I recommend this entire series of books: the "Bedtime" book gives words for "sleep," "book," "bath," etc., so you can "talk" through your bedtime routine. The mealtime book provides words for "drink," "eat," "bib," etc. Each page contains a photograph of the object or action being described, and a happy baby performing the sign. We like the page telling how to say, "All gone." It shows an empty (upside-down) baby bottle and a plate with nothing but "crumbs." My baby twins understood right away what "all gone" meant!

I have five children, ages 1-12, and even my older children use signs to communicate with me. For example, when we are in a quiet place, or when I am in a conversation with another adult, my older children show me the sign for "restroom" when they need to go, get an acknowledging nod from me, then slip away quietly and respectfully, without interrupting a single "beat" of my conversation. (*Note: The sign for "restroom" is not included in these baby board books.)

Even if your family chooses not to use sign as a supplemental mode of communication, these sturdy little board books are simple, clean, and engaging for young toddlers who love to look at other busy babies and learn new words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Signs for Bedtime, August 26, 2003

I got this book for my 15 month old daughter a few months ago and she just ate it up! The first day, she flipped through the pages and started doing some of the signs on her own. Two months later, she knows all of the signs by heart and uses them constantly. This is still EASILY one of her favorite books, especially to share with friends and family!

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 star board book!!! Perfect for little hands & minds!, September 25, 2004
This review is from: Baby Signs for Bedtime (Board book)
We have My 1st Baby Signs & Baby Signs for Mealtime as well as this book and my daughter just loves them! I love that these books are in board book form and are perfect for her hands and durable! I love the as you open each page there is a big photo of the word / sign to learn like Ball and the next page shows a baby signing that word! Babies love to see other babies, and now my daughter loves it sit and signs each page of the book! She is so proud of herself!!!

There are so many Baby Sign books out there for parents, both Baby Sign and American Sign Language or ASL books. I like Baby Sign because the signs are easier for little fingers and your baby can create a sign that fits to their needs. The Baby Sign for drink is your thumb to your mouth. My daughter signs drink with her 1st or pointer finger to her lips or in her mouth because she now drinks out of her Dora no spill straw cups.

It is so amazing to have your child tell you... flower, or theres a cat, or a dog, please read me this book, thank you and please! Now, she is stringing the signs together to tell me "dog sleeping".

If I have a complaint about these books is that 2 of the books have 1 sign that is in both books. Other than this, it's an awesome and must have book!

5.0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book, March 10, 2006

This review is from: Baby Signs for Bedtime (Board book)
I first received this book as a gift from a friend who bought them for her son. I had heard about baby sign language before but didn't put much thought into it and wasn't interested either. Once I received this book as well as the two others by the same author (Mealtime and Animal) we started reading them right away. I did just as the book said and my son LOVED it. He has tons of books but these three he would always grab first and bring them to me and just watch and listen as I read and signed for him. Before I knew it he learned all of the signs in each book and would do them with me. He was a little over a year when we first got them and will soon turn two and still adores these books. I highly recommend them to anyone, however if you want to teach your child sign language from ASL these books are not for you. The signs are different from that of ASL, some signs are similar but most of them are different which might cause confusion for your child but that's just my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool, July 1, 2011

Got this series when my first child was an infant and used them starting at 8 months...she taught the grow-ups the signs and knows them by heart. Great tool for children to help decrease frustration when they are still aquiring words and language. Our girls could sign before they could say the words. The one thing that held both girls attention is the real children pictured in the book...they loved that...it was like learning from a real person. Animated sign books did not work for them. Bedtime Mealtime were their favorites although we have First Signs and Animals too. Bedtime and Mealtime are part of our routine baby gifts now...hard to find at book stores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quickly picked up several new signs, January 11, 2010
By
This review is from: Baby Signs for Bedtime (Board book)
My 15 month old loved this book and he quickly picked up several new signs. I was so impressed when he later began making the sign for "moon," "quiet" and "sleepy." This is a nice little book and a fun way to learn new signs.
