EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR PARENTING LIFE FOREVER!,
By Tammy (Cambria, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Signs: The Complete Starter Kit (Paperback)
I had the good fortune of receiving this kit at my job before it was available to the public. Its amazing! I watch the tape with my son all the time (or he watches it by himself when I need a few minutes to get something done) and it really works! I first watched the tape with him at nine months and within a week he did the sign for "frog". Soon afterward he was using "eat" and "more" and now knows almost all the signs for animals. He loves reading books with me when he can "sign along" telling me what he sees. Its really incredible. You don't really know how smart your baby is until you give them the tools they need to show you. I enthusiastically recommend this to every new parent, grandparent, and child care provider!

teaching a child a second language,
By Andrea B. (MD, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Signs: The Complete Starter Kit (Paperback)
contrary to the other person who found that using made-up signs isn't helpful, I find that it is extremely helpful! Since babies do not yet have full control of their gesticulations, fine motor skills and timing, a made-up sign is a great way to start signing with a baby! once the baby gets older the signs can be modified to reflect ASL, much like a baby who says tummy learns that the actual word is stomach. Clearly, the person who reviewed this didn't read it, because it is stressed that this is a way to initially communicate with a baby, and it is ASL based!

Fun play through learning,
By Clara H. (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Signs: The Complete Starter Kit (Paperback)
I agree with Andrea. We chose to teach our daughter to sign from this series because it was also simple for US to learn. The signs are obvious and allow for our daughter the flexibility to create her own signs that make sense to her. She is growing up in a biligual household and is able to see that although mommy and daddy use different words for the same objects- mommy and daddy use the same signs. My husband was skeptcal, but since she started to communcicate with signs back to us- without any prompting- he is really glad we are too. We are BOTH really impressed with how easy and fun it is for all three of us!! I would recommend THIS series to anyone wanting to communicate with their babies and toddlers!

Originally, I saw the cover and had to buy it, what an adorable baby! Once I started reading, I found the content too interesting to put down. Really informative!

Why make up words, use ASL,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Signs: The Complete Starter Kit (Paperback)
I prefer Joseph Garcia's set. I originally got this book as a gift because family knew I had been teaching my kids Sign. Great stuff, makes for very happy babies that can communicate their needs ( milk, eat, water, change, dog, hear, airplane, help, want, book, etc.) and just "talk" by 10 months old. But, when I got this book, I found it useless, with suggestions of "made up signs". Why not actually teach a second language? Often, I had adults who knew sign approach us and start signing with the babies, how happy and confident my babies looked then! I'd recommend getting Joseph Garcia's set plus a good Signing dictionary, like a pocket one, (for when that one year old wants to know what everything is, in sign) or Joy of Signing.
