Novick, a professor of dermatology, divides this book into two sections. In "Basic Care," he addresses techniques and products for bathing a baby, including soaps, shampoos, diapers, powders, and lotions. In "Skin Problems," Novick focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of such skin diseases as rashes, eczemas, birthmarks, and other abnormalities. Comments on black skin are interspersed throughout the book. While Novick's explanations are clear and he avoids unnecessary technicality, he repeats some information found in his previous (and much better) books, Saving Face (Watts, 1986) and Super Skin ( LJ 10/15/88). Since specific products are mentioned, an appendix listing the products would have been helpful; the lack of illustrations is a major flaw. Not recommended for first purchase.
