Product Description
Jump-start language and learning skills with this simple and elegant guide to using sign language to communicate with your preverbal baby.

Imagine averting a tantrum because your baby was able to communicate her desire for a favorite toy without tears, or simply sharing in your baby's wonderment at the sight of a bird on a tree-before he has even uttered his first word! Generally, children do not develop the motor skills necessary to speak until they are two, and yet they are able to communicate using sign language as early as six months. Written by an experienced signer and a mother of three, this illustrated step-by-step guide will allow readers to join the ranks of parents around the world who experience the rich rewards of communicating with their preverbal babies by using sign language.

Studies have shown that babies who are taught to use signs to express themselves before they can actually speak are more contented because they can communicate their basic needs (and ideas!) and also are more skilled at speaking once they begin to acquire language. Full of practical tips, real anecdotes, and straightforward diagrams of more than sixty basic American Sign Language signs, Baby Talk is the essential baby-signing handbook for parents, relatives, and caregivers-and their babies, who are just a little too young to express themselves verbally.

About the Author
Monica Beyer, creator of the highly trafficked website signingbaby.com, gained firsthand knowledge of the benefits of using baby sign language from teaching her own three children. A frequent contributor to a wide range of parenting magazines, forums, and websites, she lives in Missouri.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very User Friendly, November 27, 2006
This book is perfect for learning those basic signs needed to communicate with your baby (eat, more, all done) as well as fun signs for later development. (monkey, boat)
The format is very user friendly, not bogged down with a bunch of detailed descriptions- signing instructions easy to interpret. Great first signing book for babies! My husband enjoys reading it as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars * Fantastic, Helpful, Encouraging *, December 1, 2006
By Cherry (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
I got this month for my four month old and we're showing her the signs early. It's great though because even though she's a little too young to fully learn signs, she LOVES the book! Something about the pictures and the way it's put together, she adores looking at it!
I've seen alot of signing books on the market and this one by far takes the cake. It's concise, gives you the information you want without filler that you don't need. And it's easy! Honestly,I'm so fumbly I was afraid I'd be teaching them all wrong but with notes on how to do it correctly, common mistakes and pictures of each movement, you can't mess up!
It's wonderful really,VERY recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy to have found this book!, January 29, 2007

This book is very easily understood and a great book for beginners or beyond. The pictures make sense and are easy to follow. The author's personal stories show that teaching a baby to sign can be easily done, and once started, there is no end to what can be learned. I have also found it helpful when coming upon hearing impaired people at a gathering or at the mall. It is so much easier to communicate with a person rather than just walking on by.
The author writing style is smooth, interesting and a boon to beginning baby signers!
