It is tongue in cheek funny, but the message is very real and helpful.

As a college student/parent many years ago I found this book in the university bookstore and enjoyed it for it's humor and realistic take on parenting methods. We used many of the concepts in the book with great success on our children.

Now as grandparents to be we are passing it on to my son and his wife to give them a better perspective and hopefully, give them a better family life.

A wonderful gift for new parents. Hilarious. I have been searching high and low for it. It also helps new parents not be sooooo serious about having the baby and if they react appropriately to the humor will have a much more relaxed and enjoyable experience during those first few months of new parenthood!

I picked up a used copy of this book when my youngest child was about 2 years old. I thought the book was hilarious -- and, frequently, almost too true. When my children were grown, married and beginning to reproduce, they borrowed my old copy and found it both funny and frighteningly factual. As the years passed I bought copies for my children. It was the only way I could get my copy back. I bought a copy to loan to people I worked with and it was passed from one pregnant co-worker to the next. It may still be making its way through that remarkably fertile workforce. All I know for sure is that it wasn't returned to me when I retired several years ago. I found a used one for my oldest granddaughter when she gave birth to my first great granddaughter earlier this year. It's a short book -- less then 50 pages -- but it provides vital information in a format that is less stodgy and far more realistic than most manuals for getting the baby through the first two years or so. The author is a parent and he has been there. (He's been there five times, actually, and he knows.) The information may be presented humorously but it is useful information for the new parent and we all learn better if we enjoy the process. If you have a sense of humor and a new baby, know someone who fits that description, or just like to remind yourself what your own kids were like when they were very small, this is a wonderful book.

The author addresses all of the issues of raising a baby (teething, feeding, sleeping through the night, toilet training, etc.) from the viewpoint that a baby is an insiduous devil who considers all of the above confrontations as nothing less than all out war. The author responds in kind with advice that is knowledgable (he has 5 kids of his own), practical (none of that mush and drivel that's so common in 'Your fist baby' - type books), and humorous. The author doesn't delve into the saccharin tones of those who say that your baby is a little angel and a precious joy - he's a demanding, completely self-absorbed poop dispenser, whose main goal seems to be drive you insane

My parents had this book and I found it entertaining. My brother is using some of the lessons it teaches to raise his two sons. The book is a guide to the first little while (0 to about 24ish months) of a child's life. It is humorously illustrated and is written as a sort of survival manual. It is not a highly detailed, exhaustive, minute by minute guide. It does offer practical, useful, advice on how to deal with a few specific issues (teething, talking, bedtime, bath time etc). I would strongly recommend reading it prior to the birth of your child as there is precious little time afterwards. This is an excellent augmentation to more detailed how-to books or just an amusing and potentially useful book.

This book was given to us when our first baby was born in 1979. It is tongue in cheek funny, but the message is very real and helpful. Many years ago I passed the book on to another young friend with a newborn and never got it back. When my daughter had her first baby recently I tried to find the book and found it was out of print. I was happy to find an old copy of it on amazon.
