I think it's a great product. Doesn't require batteries or special bags.

Does however require some common sense, which as we know is not all that common. If you fold up the used diaper - with the wipes inside, you reduce the smell and can fit more diapers in the pail. I have twin girls and with all of those diapers I change the pail 2x a week...

To the makers of the new Diaper Champ:

I am very disappointed in the new Diaper Champ. We had one of the older Diaper Champs for our first son and we loved it. When anyone mentioned Diaper Genie, we quickly steered them towards your product. "Don't get stuck buying up their expensive cartridges," we'd say. Not anymore. If it was just one flaw, I could handle it, but you have re-designed the DC to the point of uselessness.

First, it's much shorter. I'm not a tall guy, so I can only imagine how frustrating this is for taller people. I want to stay as close to my daughter when she's on the changing table, bending over just gets me that much further from her. Plus, I'm an adult. Bending over gets tougher each year. Every time I toss out a diaper, I'm reminded that next time, will be a little more uncomfortable.

Secondly, it's smaller. Your claim that it allows for less odors to escape is ridiculous. Of course it's going to smell less, because I'm changing the bag in it every other day. So much for saving money in these difficult times.

Thirdly, did anyone actually open the Champ and try replacing a bag before you shipped it off? It is top heavy and ridiculously off-balance. If the Diaper Champ is open, it will not stand up. How does a fact like this get past your development team? Do your engineers have children? I have banged-up walls and stubbed toes because of this ridiculous and unnecessary "upgrade."

I don't know why you felt the need to upgrade a fine product. Yes, it's true, scraping my knuckles every time I opened the old Champ was not a pleasant experience. I do like the "button" option on the new one, though getting a bag in and out of the Champ is like some kind of Chinese Chin-Ning Chu mind game. I'm with kids all day, so I need a little mental stimulation, but at what cost, I ask you? Every time I am rocking my daughter to sleep, I sneer at my new Diaper Champ and whisper, "Why can't you be like your big brother?" Imagine the damage I am doing to my daughter.

I think it's a great product. Doesn't require batteries or special bags.

Does however require some common sense, which as we know is not all that common. If you fold up the used diaper - with the wipes inside, you reduce the smell and can fit more diapers in the pail. I have twin girls and with all of those diapers I change the pail 2x a week.

The people complaining about changing the bag out remind me of the actors on infomercials who can't use a colander or are attacked by vegetable peelers.

Seriously people.
1)A bag of used diapers taken out of the pail is in fact smelly, it is full of pee and poo.
2)Half a kitchen bag full of dirty diapers already weighs about 15-20 lbs, I'm glad the whole bag isn't used!

This product is excellent for low maintenance people possessing common sense. All others should get a diaper genie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stinky and small., October 31, 2009
This review is from: Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue (Baby Product)
We used to own the larger, original Diaper Champ and loved it. It held a lot and didn't stink, but we tossed it after our first child during a move. I couldn't find it at any local stores when our second baby came along, so I assumed this one replaced it and bought it. I wish I knew how bad it was (or that they still make the other one). The first problem you are faced with is just how small it is, it only uses about half the capacity of a tall kitchen trash bag, and seems to fill up just in a few short days. The second problem is that it doesn't really seal all that well, so there is always a gentle odor in the room. The third problem is that there is no plunger like in the original (which I think it was caused it to seal better) so there is no weighted push to the diaper, so if it doesn't slide gently into the bag, you have to shake the whole thing, kick it a few times, and then slam it against the ground to clear the diaper in order to be able to open it again. Try all that with a squirmy kid.

Finally, and this is a BIG one, the darned thing "burps" when you turn the handle to put in a diaper. It's not a pleasant situation. The burp is stale diaper gas that has been sitting in the Champ. I'm not sure what's causing it, probably something with how the seals are designed, or chute the diaper goes down, but this thing will instantly make the back half of my house reek with the addition of just one diaper. It's awful, I don't drop one it until we are completely done changing, then I throw the diaper in and we run out of the room. It actually makes me gag, it's worse than the smell of the fresh diaper.

I'm ordering the original today, and I'll just take the diapers out to the trashcans one by one instead of using this foulness again.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are better choices, but it will do, April 26, 2010
This thing does have some problems. On ours the handle pops off a lot. The thing gets jammed a good bit. I find that we have to empty it every 12-16 newborn diapers or it starts jamming and the handle starts coming off. And as many have noted, it's very top heavy and because of this it's difficult to change the bag.

Here's the worst part: We needed another one for downstairs, and I said the heck with it and jumped on Craigslist. In two minutes I found an older one for $10. This is the one that is selling on Amazon for $120, and it is a BEAST. Very tall, never jams, doesn't fall over, rock solid. It's the older model with the piston in the center. You drop in the dirty diaper and flip the handle back to front. Then you drop in another diaper and flip the handle front to back. No problems, no mess. If you can find one on CL or if you're willing to pay the extra cash, the older ones rock.

If you have to go with this guy, you can cut down on a bunch of your problems by emptying it every other day. That really helps. It's also a good idea to get a big Ziploc freezer bag full of gravel and drop it in the bottom of the thing before you put the bag in. That gives it a lot of bottom weight, doesn't take up too much space, and eliminates the tipping.

4.0 out of 5 stars PROTIP to avoid odor: Leave the handle UP!, June 1, 2011
By
Gabe W (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue (Baby Product)
First, the crucial tip: You will get a nasty odor to the face every time you throw away a diaper in the Diaper Champ if you typically leave the compartment in the "closed" position, as it's pictured. Instead, ALWAYS LEAVE THE HANDLE PUSHED BACKWARD so that the Champ looks "open". This prevents the compartment from filling up with nasty air to greet you with when you flip the handle back. Leaving it open literally makes this thing ODORLESS until you actually have to open it to change bags.

Seriously, folks.

Second, a review: the great positive of this can is that it uses regular kitchen bags and doesn't require the purchase of expensive proprietary bag refills. The downsides are that it's somewhat low to the ground (never bothered me until someone pointed it out) and that you'll end up wasting some of the space in every kitchen bag you use because the Champ will fill up long before the trash bag is at capacity. That said, it's a heavy bag as it is (as another reviewer noted) so I don't know how many more diapers you'd really want to put in the thing so that you can lug it outside to your trash can like some kind of hobo Santa Claus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cloth diapering., April 22, 2011
We use Fuzzibunz cloth diapers and this item works very well for us. By the time the pail is full it's time to wash the diapers anyway. We never noticed an odor but we keep the handle up so it traps the odors more efficiently. I would especially recommend this pail for cloth diapering parents because the opening is large enough for hyrbid/cloth diapers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worked for us, March 22, 2011
This review is from: Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue (Baby Product)
It seems there are a lot of unsatisfied folks with this product. I was fine with it. It is the only diaper garbage pail I have ever purchased so who's to say I wouldn't like something better. But the fact of the matter for me was that I found it strange that I had to buy a separate garbage can for my small apartment to house dirty diapers. I didn't want it to be big and I didn't want it to cost a lot. Well, and of course, no one wants the smell.

Why I liked it:
1. It was small.
Some say short - but whatever. I never threw away a diaper while my kid was still on the table. I moved it aside folded over, finished the kid, put him down, then wrapped up my poop pellet and tossed it. That way I had two hands - one to pull the handle back and one to toss the diaper. Some say you can't get tons of diapers in it. But do you really want a huge bag of diapers hanging out in your house for more then a week? Not to mention, if our bag was anymore full then it would be when we put it out, the garbagemen would fine us for it being too heavy!

2. It held the odor in.
I never smelled poopy diapers in our place. Sure it smelled when you opened the whole thing to change the bag? Diapers sitting in a bag for a few days. How could it not smell?

3. Your own garbage bags.
This was key for us. One box of garbage bags for the whole house.

4. Good price.

Best part of all is that I realized how many diapers I was wasting and started doing the appropriate amount of diaper changing. And once my son got older, we could actually start dumping the poop in the toilet and forget about the smell in the garbage.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue (Baby Product)
I have purchased three Diaper Champs- two older model and this new model. I thought the first two old style models were very good so I didn't listen to the negative reviews about the new model and bought it. My mistake. This one is not as good-- by a long shot. First, it's lower to the ground than the original which is annoying if you are tall. Second, this one doesn't seem to hold as many diapers. Third, the new handle/bucket doesn't seem to dispose of the diaper as easily and I have to fidget to get the diaper into the bottom part of the bin. Lastly, and I attribute this to the new handle/bucket feature too, this model doesn't keep the smell away as effectively as the old model. On the upside, I find it easier to remove the garbage bag out of this model. If this is your first Diaper Champ purchase you probably won't be disappointed but if you've owned the older model you might consider checking out a different brand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diaper Champ-very practical, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue (Baby Product)
First off let me state that I'm a mom of three and provide child care out of my home. We had a Diaper Genie previously and I would definitely recommend the Diaper Champ over the Diaper Genie any day. Two of the negative things I have heard/read about this product and my opinions are:
* It doesn't hold odor/it stinks/ it blows you over when you open, etc. My opinion...think about what you are putting inside it. :-) Of course it's going to stink. You have a wide open bag full of soiled diapers! I do not have a problem with the Diaper Champ holding the odor. When it's closed I don't smell a thing. Practical things to do: empty on a regular basis. Our is done every night. The more diapers that are in that bag and the longer it sits...the more it's going to stink! The nice thing is that you don't have to buy expensive bag refills (that don't stay twisted so it stinks just the same). Just use smaller bags. You can easily use plastic grocery bags or tall kitchen garbage bags. Also, I make a habit of spraying it down with Oust or Lysol when I change the bags. I had to do the same with the Diaper Genie. I expect that I'll have to do it with any pail...plastic can hold odor and so it's best to take precautions and spray it down.
* It falls over. Right in the instructions it tells you that it's top heavy. They even have a little tab in the front for you to hold the pail down with your foot while you empty it. :-) Easily done and not frusterating at all when you follow the directions that are on the printed materials.

Overall, it's one of the better diaper pails I've used in the last 10 years or so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concealed messes, February 23, 2011

I bought this item even though I had read a few not-so-good reviews mostly about being top heavy. It is, but that is why the small foot rest is there, problem solved. It uses ANY bags you want- which saves $$$, it is easy one handed (and one footed) use. Another complaint I have read about is the small size doesn't hold many diapers and to that I say I planned on emptying my diaper pail often anyway. Who wants all that "stuff" hanging around in the house more than a couple of days? And the smell is adequately contained in pail. This product is convenient, and the size fits neatly between all the other "equipment" in my nursery. I see no need to spend extra cash on electric ones, or pails that use bag refills or scented items.
