Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Line drawings that look like doodles of cute kittens in gray, orange, white, and blue cannot save this lame tale of a contrary kitten. Mother cat makes a special dinner of fish sandwiches and milk. All dig in except the blue cat, who refuses dinner, a cupcake (``Yum-Yum''), and a bedtime story. When his mother asks if he is sorry for the way he acted, he says ``no.'' Since she ``looked worried'' and ``also looked very sad,'' the cat seemingly makes amends until the final page when mother says that he must be sleepy, and he jumps up, shouting ``NO!'' This is a story of manipulation at its worst. The language is flat, especially when read aloud. This reviewer says ``NO!'' Marianne Pilla, formerly at Allard K. Lowenstein Library of Long Beach, N.Y.

I bought this delightful book years ago for my older child. She and I read it over and over again and now we read it with our younger child. The book paints a sweet family scene of a mother cat and her kittens. One particular kitten, Baby Blue Cat, doesn't like to go along with the mother's nightly rituals and learns a lesson about cooperation. The kitten stills keeps her/his spirit and spunk and my kids can really relate with Baby Blue Cat. They love the part where they can yell the kitten's line -- "and then Baby Blue Cat said 'NO!' " It's delightful. All my friends who have read it also love the book. I had not been able to locate the book until now, and I was thrilled to see you have it. "Baby Blue Cat who says no" should be in every young kid's library. I highly reccommend this book. Thanks, Ainslie Pryor!

The Baby Blue cat who said NO is a simply illustrated book with lots of repetition for toddlers who seem to love it so.Baby Blue cat gives his mother a difficult time throughout the day by repeating the mantra of every two year old as an answer to every question posed to him. Mama cat is exasperated by the end of the day. My son asked for this book to be read almost every day when he was around two, somehow I never tired of it.Read this book to your toddler and you will see why.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other user reviews here: this book is immediately and universally appealing to young children -- there's just something about it. It was my daughters' favorite book some 20 years ago, and now it's also my grandson's first choice. Hard to figure out how Marianne Pilla of the School Library Journal could be so far off the mark in her sour review. "Manipulation at its worst"? She obviously has no idea what little kids like.

My daughter and I read this book a few times each week. It was a gift from my sister to me for one of my early birthdays, and I knew this book by heart while growing up. Now my daughter does too. It has a great lesson about the consequences of disobeying a parent without too much "lesson". Just enough to let a child know it makes a mommy or daddy sad when they don't listen to them; it's a great way for a child to remember that "no" isn't what you tell a parent.
I cherish this book, and am about to order another copy just "in case"!!!
