Nathan Kent knows what he wants

He and his wife, Casey, have moved back to California so he can take a shot at making partner in his prestigious law firm. Even if it means being closer to the family he doesn't quite fit into. It'll also give him a chance to get to know his father-in-law better. Best of all, the move will allow him to reconnect with Casey. Especially important now that she's given up her own law practice to see if they can finally get pregnant.

He's just not sure he can handle what he gets

What he finds is a law office in a mess, a family who needs him and a coworker who has her eye on him—and his job. And that's before Casey ends up on the opposite side of a legal battle….

More About the Author

Debra Salonen wrote her first story in crayon on the underside of her mother's coffee table. Her mother was not amused. Subsequent writing efforts included a screenplay for Flipper--in block print on lined paper (you can see why it never got picked up, right?), a spy thriller --okay, a blatant rip-off of James Bond; an Irma Bombeck-esque series of letters to her family, which might have come across as a tad more whiny than amusing, and, eventually, she enjoyed a four-year stint as an award-winning feature writer for a newspaper.

In 2000, her first romance novel was published by Harlequin for its Superromance line. That novel, THAT COWBOY'S KIDS, has recently been re-released, bringing Deb's total number of published books to 30. Her May 2010 release, UNTIL HE MET RACHEL, was honored by RTBook Reviews as the Reviewer's Choice for "Best Superromance of 2010."

In addition to her two current Superromance titles, RETURN TO THE BLACK HILLS and A FATHER'S QUEST, Deb is enjoying a renewed flirtation with short stories. Her first Kindle release, "A Hundred Years or More," looks at that special bond between a pet and his owner, and what happens when a pet--in this case, a parrot--outlives his owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can Casey & Nathan find that special feeling again?, January 9, 2007
This review is from: A Baby on the Way (Harlequin Superromance, No 1386) (Mass Market Paperback)
Casey & Nathan are moving back to California from Boston, both are lawyers. Casey's not too sure she wants to but Nathan can make partner by getting the San Francisco office organized and she can stay home. Nathan's widowed-mother, his younger but both adult sister and brother are clingy she feels and her widowed father she has very mixed emotions about and then there's the not getting pregnant part of their marriage that has them both upset most of the time.

Nathan has to get the office organized as fast as possible so he has Gwyneth Jacobi come. She wants Nathan as well as his present job but he needs her ability to work. Gwyneth tries her best to ensnare him into a relationship so Casey will be out of the picture.

Casey's father, Red Buchanan, plans to have Casey help him keep a turkey holding pen from being built next to his 1500 acre ranch in the Central Valley of CA. Red also employs Casey's teenage love, Jimmy, who has become the husband of her teenage best friend, Sarah. All these people and the feelings she had/has are facing Casey when she gets to her father's ranch and she really doesn't want any of it.

Nathan proves to be one of the best heroes I've read in a long time! and Casey is a very good heroine too. Ms Salonen gives us a LOVE story that is so good but all her characters are very human too.

This book makes me feel just like her first book THAT COWBOY'S KIDS HSR#910-every emotion between tears and laughter!

A BABY ON THE WAY by Debra Salonen

December 14, 2006

Rating **** (4 Stars)

Nathan Kent and his wife Casey have drifted apart. It seems that lately they don't connect all. Maybe it has to do with trying to get pregnant and not succeeding, and the stress of it all is taking a toll on their relationship. What's making matters worse is that Nathan has accepted a position at his law firm's San Francisco office, meaning they will be moving back home to California. Casey hasn't been home in ages, not since her widowed father sent her away to live with an aunt in Boston so Casey could learn to be a real lady, and not the tomboy farm girl she was growing up to be. Nathan's family is also in California, with siblings that he feels are taking advantage of their elderly mother.

When the two finally make the move to San Francisco, there are two problems waiting for them. Casey has an old boyfriend who ended up marrying her best friend. She has not spoken to either Sarah (who happens to be pregnant) or Jimmy in years, and is not looking forward to meeting either of them again. It's not making things easier, knowing that she has a strained relationship with her father, who has opened his home to Sarah and Jimmy as if their rightful place is at Casey's childhood home, while Casey lived in Boston.

The other problem that Casey did not foresee is the appearance of a coworker of Nathan's. Gwyneth is a shark of a lawyer who will do anything to get what she wants. And what she currently wants is Nathan. Nathan is somewhat attracted to Gwyneth, but he would never cheat on Casey because he loves her despite the problems they are currently having. But with sex almost non-existent between the couple, Nathan is almost tempted...

A BABY ON THE WAY is the story of a married couple who desperately needs to find their way back into each other's arms again. There's a lot of conflict and tension between them, especially with Gwyneth and Jimmy making things a lot more complicated that it needed to be. Casey no longer loves Jimmy, as he was a high school crush that didn't turn into anything serious, but he does present a potential problem.

Gwyneth is more of an issue, as she is working closely with Nathan and tries whatever she can to manipulate Nathan into spending more time with her. Casey isn't happy at all that Gwyneth is in the picture, but she tries her best to trust Nathan, despite the tension that exists between them.

The subplot of Casey, who happens also to be a lawyer, being pulled into her father's crusade to fight a huge corporation (GroWell) from taking over land that will greatly impact the other farmers in the region will keep the readers' interest. It not only involves her father and his livelihood, but GroWell's attorney happens to be Nathan and his group. It becomes a conflict of interest for Nathan, and he now needs to decide whether to back his wife and her father, or remain loyal to the company, thus alienating his wife further. However, Casey slowly renews her relationship with her father through his campaign against the conglomerate, and she begins to see another side of him and likes what she sees.

Casey's relationship with her father is that of a stranger. He treats Jimmy and Sarah as family, and Casey almost feels like the third wheel. Readers will be happy to know, however, that Red, Casey's father, has his own agenda, which is to help bring romance and love back to a relationship that seems to be falling apart. Casey has actually moved back to her father's farm, making it easier for her to work with her father and his campaign against GroWell, but it doesn't help her relationship with Nathan, and Red pulls few tricks of his own to help bring the two back together.

Readers will enjoy A BABY ON THE WAY by Debra Salonen. Realistic characters and a story line that will keep readers engaged is her trademark, and this book will not fail to please her fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent story, March 11, 2010
This review is from: A Baby on the Way (Harlequin Superromance, No 1386) (Mass Market Paperback)
This story wasn't too bad yet I can't believe that Gwyneth was so forward not that Nathan would even entertain ideas of her. I never got the feeling that Casey did for Jimmy. Seemed to me that Nathan was a bit wrapped up in himself and his life not thinking how things affected Casey. Yet he finally came around and realized that it wasn't only about him.
