MUCH better than you think....a great guilty pleasure!,

Greeted with giggles in the UK, and not even released here in the US, Naomi Campbell's debut album "babywoman" is actually is an ecclectic and enjoyable pop album. I have a feeling that if Epic had even bothered to give it a chance, and put some massive marketing muscle behind it (like they did for Jennifer Lopez's "On the 6") Campbell might have found some chart success. There are many pleasures to be found on "babywoman." It playfully shifts tempos and textures at the drop of a hat, like Naomi backstage at a fashion show, thanks mostly to it's impressive cast of producers, which include Gavin Friday, Tim Simenon, Youth, and PM Dawn among others. Not that Naomi doesn't provide some charm of her own. On the funky, Luscious Jackson-penned "Life of Leisure" she tells off a guy for being lazy (mind you, years before TLC made this kind of thing fashionable). "You don't have a job/I got FOUR," she scolds. She's also a flirt, like on the hip-hopped "Looks Swanks (Spooky)," where she asks a potential suitor "Tell me who was your maker/Who do I have to thank?", and a bit of a tease on the title track, which serves also as an audio ego massage for her. "Try to steal a kiss from my million-dollar lips," she taunts. So, the question is asked, can she sing? Yes. She's got a nice smoky alto, and sounds quite lovely when she sticks to a mellow murmur. A great example is the jazzy, sultry, Sade-esque "Picnic in the Rain"--the sweetness in her voice makes lines like "I can feel the first drop/Touching down on my lips like honey" FAR sexier than they ever needed to be. She less successful when she turns up the volume, like on the second verse of the otherwise thrilling, Middle Eastern-flavored opening number "Love and Tears." The ablum is not without it's clunkers: "Sunshine On a Rainy Day" sounds like a rejected Viagra jingle, "When I Think About Love" is a sappy ballad, like Celine Dion sans the bombast. And Campbell's reggae-rock cover of "Ride a White Swan" is simply ridiculous. But that's what the skip button is for, and the good news is you won't need it very often. "Babywoman" is a richly produced ear candy, the kind of album that usually goes platinum. This one definately should have.

Not impressed in NY,

Please!!! Does this lady really think she can crossover into the music world? Her lyrics are egotistical bordering on the verge of being downright degrading to women. Much of what she tries to sing about is herself. Why would you want to pay that much money to hear her have to make a desperate attempt in singing for the purpose of trying to convince herself that she is something that she is not. If you want to listen to a great CD then buy anything by SADE. Not only can this women sing but her lyrics are down to earth. Naomi, you should have taken music lessons from U2 when you had the chance!!!

If you hate Naomi...,

...you're gonna hate this, judging from the majority of opinions. If you love Naomi, you will certainly love her album. And if you don't care about Naomi at all and will listen to the songs without prejudice, you might find it's actually not bad. She can sing and her voice is nice, when she doesn't try to sound girly or go over the top. Nice average pop; I'm giving ****, because I bought this album when it first came out and keep returning to it from time to time - therefore I must admit I like it a little above average :)
