I really like the BabyKicks Nursing Pads - Jersey, Set of 3, so when I saw they had a diaper made of basically the same material, I wanted to try it out. I liked it, but there were a few things (for me) that don't make this a 4- or 5-star item...

The Material-- (This I actually give 5 stars)
The item is primarily a Hemp/Cotton blend-- hemp has great absorbency without a lot of the bulk. Very importantly-- you have to wash and dry it a few times to get all the natural plant oils out, so that it softens up and absorbs more. (Some people short-cut this and boil their hemp for 20 mins and then cool them down and wash them) I knew this going in, so this wasn't an issue for me. Just know that it'll be a bit rough at first until it breaks in.

YOU STILL NEED A WATERPROOF COVER. This is important, else the material will saturate and leak through to clothes, bedding, etc. I *will* say that my daughter wet this one and it didn't leak through!!! (I tempted fate without a cover during nap time, and she's a side sleeper) That was impressive, but not sure about how I would have done that over-night. I also don't know about any "#2 situations," we were apparently strictly doing #1 with our test.

The Fit -- (This is where the lower rating comes in)
These diapers say they fit up to 40lbs. I don't know whose 40lbs they were thinking... My daughter is 6mos/25lbs, and I can BARELY get the largest snap setting to fit her. She is a chunker, but there should have still been enough room there. If you have a tall, lean baby, I would see this possibly working better. But if you have a bruiser... I don't recommend it.

The label reads as follows:

50% Organic Cotton
33% Natural Hemp
17% Polyester

Now when you are buying a diaper that is advertised as an Organic diaper, don't you expect it to be just that? Polyester is not and cannot be Organic. (Yes this is partially my fault for not reading the ENTIRE description of the product. The title is very misleading) The diaper is very rough even after multiple washings. It is also VERY bulky. I would not use with the original insert unless it was overnight. I use with a 2 layer hemp fleece insert and it has to be changed every 2 to 3 hours which is fine with me. I do somewhat agree with another users review that this won't fit to 40 pounds. My daughter is 5m old and 19 pounds and the thigh gets snapped on the biggest setting and her tummy gets snapped at the snap right before that. As far as rise goes, she is on the orange so there is some room for length. I know she will most likely thin out when she starts crawling.

I do like the diaper but I don't feel I should be paying $20 per diaper on something that is not even completely natural and I still have to purchase a cover for. Also, as mentioned before, the inserts are super bulky and took me 3 dry cycles in a brand new dryer.

Also 2 of the 6 diapers that I ordered had bad elastic. One of them the casing wasn't even sewn into the diaper. The elastic was free to move around from side to side so when stretched to go around my little ones legs, it ended up in her butt crack. I know how to sew pretty well so I will just fix this myself. The other diaper, the elastic on the back of the waist wasn't even sewn on so there was no elasticity. Luckily the fabric is stretchy so this is not a huge problem.

My heavy soaker was leaking through pockets and normal fitteds were saturated in no time! So I tried these and stuff with one extra hemp insert and it's wonderful!! Worth every penny and wash well! Paired with wool is a dream night time solution for us:)

First impressions: Soft, comfy, really cute snaps. And I love anything in hemp--such an absorbent material and this diaper comes with one hemp insert.

I'm used to diapers with the bottom snaps on the middle bit of cloth instead of on the side flaps (the opposite of here), so I had to fumble a bit before I was used to putting this one on. But now that I am used to it this is my new favorite night time diaper. I add two extra hemp inserts and don't have to change my daughter for 12+ hours. The fit around the leg is great.

At first I was disappointed that I needed to use a cover with this diaper (for some reason I had noticed this when purchasing), but at this point I am really glad. A large number of our all-in-one diapers have been failing us lately, with liquid leaking right through the "waterproof" material. So at the end of the day I'm glad we didn't go for an all-in-one here, because this diaper is still working just fine. Viva la BabyKicks!!

I initially purchased one of these when looking for a nighttime solution for my super-soaking toddler, but quickly went back and ordered several more. They're trim, super soft, easy to dunk or spray to get poop off (points over other fitteds with lay-in or snap-in inserts--though Daddy wouldn't pull the inserts out because he hates touching pee *eyeroll*) and were easy for me to tell others how to put on since the snaps are color coded!
Their cuteness factor was a big deal to me--the colorful snaps on a natural diaper is almost as classically cute as a pinned prefold.
The fabric, a hemp/cotton blend, was a draw as well since my boys are sensitive to synthetic fibers.
The price was a huge draw, as well as their being readily available, unlike many WAHM diapers on the market at the time.
When we purchased these, we were in the process of changing over from all synthetic, mass-marketed pocket diapers, to natural fibers to attempt and curb my son's bleeding, blistered rashes. Within 2 days in Babykicks fitteds, his bum was on the mend and since we've been using our Babykicks in conjunction with other natural fiber diapers, we have had signifigantly less rashes. We were even able to use this diaper as a trainer when our toddler began showing signs of readiness--the diaper itself without the insert, snapped on the largest setting, functioned as a pull-up; and the insert we used inside our Flips Trainers as an absorbant layer.
We also loved how small these snapped down, they were the first One Size diaper to fit our new baby last spring, and after nearly 2 years, our second baby is still using these diapers!
We paired these diapers with wool interlock fitteds for nighttime, though when our toddler was about 2.5, we began to have to double stuff the fitted to be sufficiently absorbant for his nighttime needs.
Overall, a great diaper for a great price, truly a "birth to potty training" diaper, unlike some of the other One Size diapers on the market.
