Sometime in 1975 Atlantic Records launched their very short-lived Wing & A Prayer subsidiary label in New York City, primarily to provide an outlet for the Disco studio groups Consumer Rapport and Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps assembled by Harold Wheeler, who had been associated with the Broadway musical The Wiz, at a time when Disco was in its infancy. Just 2 albums were released in their existence along with 6 singles and all we now have at our disposal is the original vinyl covered here as, insofar as I can tell, no CD compilation of their work exists nor have any of the sides even been included in any multiple-artist quality CD compilations.

The first to reach national attention was Consumer Rapport's rendition of Ease On Down The Road from The Wiz which, with Frank Floyd taking the lead (he was a pit singer in the musical), reached # 19 R&B and # just missed the Billboard Pop Hot 100 Top 40 at # 42 in April-May 1975 b/w Go On With Your Bad Self as Wing & A Prayer 101. However the follow-up Everybody Join Hands b/w Love Takes Tears (Wing & A Prayer 102) went nowhere on any of the charts.

For his other group, featuring singers Vivian Cherry, Arlene Martell, Helen Miles and Linda November, Wheeler reached back to 1926 and a big hit for Jan Garber, Baby Face, and in the Nov 1975-Jan 1976 stretch the 3:34 in length Disco interpretation peaked at # 6 Adult Contemporary, # 14 Hot 100 and # 32 R&B as Wing & A Prayer 103 b/w a 6:38 long version of the same song. A special DJ issue as Wing & A Prayer 103 DJ had the shorter rendition on both sides. In that same period, in time for the Holiday season, they also released a promo-only 45-rpm of A Holiday Gift on both sides, with Consumer Rapport performing on one side and The Wing And A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps on the flipside.
