Our Baby-Safe Standards

Baby-safe is how we create, test, and improve our products. Between idea and reality we talk to parents, doctors, regulatory experts and scientists. We learn what we should and shouldn't do to make it safe and great. How does the product feel and smell (or doesn't)? How does it work and why? What ingredients will make it better? What which are unsafe or unnecessary? How can we can make it easy or fun and economical to use? We test and refine it. And once it's on the shelf it's never off our radar. We review ingredients, the latest studies, listen to your feedback and we're on the lookout for new and better ways to improve performance or safety. Just like our babies - we never sleep.

Babyganics Crib Notes

Our Do’s And Our Don’ts

It goes without saying (but we'll say it anyway) we don't use toxic or harmful ingredients. But there's no generally accepted standard for "natural" and "safe" so we've come up with our own. All our ingredients are vetted by experts as safe to use around babies. Our "never use" ingredients come from Natural Product Standards, EU and US lists of ingredients to avoid (parabens, phthalates, known toxins, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, etc.). Then the real parent test: "Is this something we'd confidently use around or on our own babies?" If it's on the shelf, the answer is "Yes." In the end, the best way for all of us to help babies develop and thrive is to focus on the yeses. How can we add value to you and your baby's world? How can we better nourish, protect, soothe, or clean? The answers are in ingredients like NeoNourish and Orange Blossom in our night time formulas to relax your baby. It's in soothing, calming ingredients like Colloidal Oatmeal, Olive Oil, Shea Butter, Aloe and Vitamin E. Our ‘do's’ mean our products aren't just safe, they're gentle, nourishing, moisturizing, cleansing, soothing, rash-reducing, healing, stain-removing, grease-cutting, clean-rinsing, broad spectrum, super-protective, absorbent and a really good value. So remember the don'ts - But don't forget the do's.

Our Testing

We test every product and ingredient for safety and efficacy (Does it rinse? Clean? Protect? Moisturize? Heal?) and our preservatives (Will it last, resist contamination, and is it safe?). We test for skin irritation (Human Repeat Insult Patch Testing if you want to get all technical) and eye irritation. We do SPF, Water Resistance & Broad Spectrum tests for our sun care products and Stability and Micro Contamination tests on all our formulas. That’s the short list. If you want to satisfy your inner chemistry nerd call our toll free number. Plenty of geeks on our end are standing by to talk!

NeoNourish

As part of our ongoing commitment to add yeses to our products we’ve created an ingredient blend that's special enough to get its own little shout out. This 100% natural, cold-pressed seed oil blend is specifically made for the unique needs of babies’ 'work in progress' skin. It's a combination of oils from the seeds of Black Cumin, Tomato, Sunflower, Cranberry and Red Raspberry. They’re specially balanced to supplement your baby's natural skin defenses against the environment. You’ll find it in our products that come in the most direct contact with your baby’s skin. From lotions to bath products and even in our diapers. (Heck, we're tempted to put it all over ourselves.).

I was excited to see a mineral-based spray for sun protection because many, if not all, are chemical-based. Well, it's true that this product is mineral-based because zinc oxide which provide protection by providing a barrier is one of the active ingredients. However, the other two active ingredients are octinoxate and octisalate - they're chemical-based and work by reacting with your skin after absorption.

Chemical-based products are correctly called sunscreen and require you to apply 15-30 minutes before heading outside. Mineral-based products are technically sun blocks, and you can head outside immediately after application. I can't say the product's name is deceptive because it is a sunscreen AND is partially mineral-based, but I was expecting a 100% mineral-based product. This sunscreen received 3 from EWG's rating. While 3 isn't too bad, it's still worse than 100% mineral-based sun blocks.

As for its effectiveness, it works fine. The application isn't like a typical spray because it dispenses more like a foamy lotion pump, instead of misty droplets. So, you can't just spritz everywhere - you still have to rub it in. I suppose you should rub other sprayed sunscreens too, but the term "spray" is a bit misleading. It still goes on easier than lotions.

I prefer to use items with less chemicals, so I won't use it. However, if I send my kids away with other adults who will be applying sunscreen, this is a decent compromise because it's easy to apply and isn't as chemical-y as other sunscreen sprays.

I have not used this sunscreen: however I assumed it was good because they put the word "...ganics." Check this list out if you are concerned about chemicals in sunscreen. Below is from the website [...]

FINALLY: One brand I will not include on any list is BabyGanics Sunscreen. I get TONS of questions about this one and I refuse to endorse it. It’s loaded with chemicals (to name a few; PEG, phenoxyethanol, dimethicone, polysorbate 60, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, and it uses chemical sunscreen ingredients). EWG rates it a TWO which blows my MIND. BabyGanics is Greenwashing at it’s finest.

Hello Kara, Thank you for your review; we hear and appreciate your concerns. The word "babyganics", for us, equals baby-safe and delivering on that promise through proof and practice is what we're all about. As part of our continual review process we are always looking at ways to improve our products and use new ingredients as they become available and have recently updated our mineral based sunscreen spray formula. We offer both a mineral-based chemical sunscreen and a pure mineral physical sunscreen for those who prefer to not use chemical sunscreens. We currently have a Pure Mineral Sunscreen Stick 50+ SPF and our Pure Mineral Sunscreen Lotion 30+ SPF (this is also a great option for grown ups with super sensitive skin!). Our full list of ingredients for all Babyganics products are also available on our website for any consumer to review. We love to chat! Feel free to email us at foundingfathers@babyganics.com or call us at 1800-378-7803.

Recently, I went on a three month tour of "safer" sunscreens and sunblocks using the EWG website. I tried 6-7 of the options that ranked well (1's and 2's on EWG) and were available on Amazon. The only one that worked for me (my criteria below) was Babyganics partially chemical based (+zinc oxide) formula. I had to settle with a "moderately" hazardous sunscreen (per EWG) because all of the sunblocks I tried (non chemical) left me looking like a ghost no matter how much time and effort I took to rub in the lotion. So that appears to be the compromise: look quite pale using the safest sunblocks or use something a bit less safe that doesn't show. I'm not vain, but I also don't like having pretty white residue showing all over me.

My criteria for a sunscreen: must be able to rub in and not be visible within a few minutes on face, neck, arms, and legs; must not leave the skin oily; must not come off easily with sweat and burn the eyes; must be relatively easy rub into hairy areas without leaving residue (scruff on face, hair on arms/legs). Babyganics satisfied the criteria and is safer than the average, better known brand name sunscreens on the market.

I have yet to find a bette option - but hope to find something, eventually, that is less chemical based that also rubs in relatively easy.

my 2 year old has light eyes and freckles just like his dad and living in Los Angeles needing sunscreen is as ubiquitous as drinking water a #necessity! We've tried every product on the market and babyganics makes the best of them all. Not only do we use it on our son but I find that I'm using as well. Easy to apply, not sticky or greasy and get the job done.

Kept my 2 yr old twin girls and I burn free after a day at Disneyland. I would say that is a great test. My girls also didn't freak out over the spray like they have with the other spray on sunscreens I have tried and this one is harmful chemical free which I love !

***EDIT 8/20/2014 ****
My oldest daughter has declared that she does not like this sunscreen because it doesn't go on as smooth as the other kinds she is used to. I still like it, and I especially like the skin and environment friendly nature of the product, so I'm only taking 1 star off. Hey, even if it's a great product, if you can't get the kids to wear it, then it won't work, right?
****** END EDIT ******

I thought all sunscreens smelled the same. You know--that sunscreen smell. This doesn't have that. It almost doesn't have a smell at all and the smell that is there is not like the sunscreen smell that I know--it's more flowery. I put it on my baby and it didn't leave a sticky or greasy residue. She didn't get a sunburn, either, but we were only in the sun for an hour or so, so I'll need to be out in it longer before I can say for sure that it works just as well as any other stuff I've tried, but I don't have any reason to doubt thus far. I like this--I'll get it again.

Recommended.

Took my little ones to the beach this weekend and the 50SPF Mineral-Based Sunscreen Spray was so easy to apply and kept my little one as white and chubby as ever! Great buy and comes in a 2 pack with the frustration free packaging! Highly recommended!
