Editorial Reviews

Review

"Any mother-to-be who buys What to Expect When You're Expecting should pick up a copy of Babygate. It offers indispensable advice to allow working parents to stay on the job and is a blueprint for change in the coming work–family revolution."
Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of Why Women Still Can't Have It All

"A Better Balance, one of the outstanding defenders of parents' legal rights in the United States, has given us an indispensable guide with Babygate. No new parent should leave the hospital without it!"
Ann Crittenden, Pulitzer Prize nominee and author of The Price of Motherhood

"If you're a working parent, you need Babygate—an invaluable and humane guide for expecting and new parents about their legal and economic rights in the American workplace. The information in its pages will provide answers to your most important questions and empower you to stand up for yourself and working families."
Katrina vanden Heuvel, publisher of the Nation

“The book is the thing that has been missing from parenting libraries, a guide to rights and provisions for pregnant women and new parents, and includes a comprehensive guide to individual state laws and regulation around everything from caregiver discrimination, paid leave policy, and breastfeeding laws.”
Rebecca Traister for New Republic

"This handbook, compiled by three attorneys at A Better Balance: The Work and Family Legal Center, takes readers step by step toward success in America’s often treacherous world of working motherhood. Offering flow charts on how and when to announce a pregnancy, examples of legally explicit doctor’s notes for workplace accommodations and state-by-state guides on maternal legal protection in the workplace, this is a critical resource for women contemplating a baby."
Ms. Magazine

Babygate is an essential guide for working moms everywhere, and a handy resource to have at your fingertips. The book is easy to read, filled with helpful anecdotes. I especially loved the section at the back, detailing each state's laws around pregnancy discrimination and family leave. This is a must-read for every expectant mom.

a good book as it reminds us of our BASIC RIGHTS. Not all employers or corporations measure up. It's nice to know that these basic rights are available and know to ask for them. Great book.
