The book by Joan Oates, Babylon (Ancient Peoples and Places), is very informative for any who wish to learn about Babylonia, whether student or expert. The book is very detailed with great photos, drawings and maps. There is also a "Mesopotamian Chronology" so you can look up rulers, dynasties and dates. The book covers the history behind monuments, cities and people is very good. I would highly suggest this book as a great resource for anyone trying to learn more about ancient Mesopotamia.

A significant portion of our knowledge of the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia comes from non-literary sources, such as art and architecture. As such, this volume provides a large selection of black-and-white illustrations, which are themselves almost worth the price of entry. The text is also very interesting, if a bit dry. It is essentially a history of Mesopotamia from the time of Sargon to the rise of the Achaemenid empire, focusing, obviously, on the city of Babylon. It is written in a scholarly but accessible manner, though some parts might be tough going for someone totally new to the subject.

This is more than the title indicates. It's a short, but fairly detailed history of the Mesopotamian region from the earliest advent of the Sumerian city states to the start of Roman domination of areas north and west of the topical areas.
Oates depicts the waxing, waning, waxing cycle of Assyrian authority in the area as well as Babylonian influence. Starting with the Sumerian cities, the book covers the careers of Sargon, Hammurabi and all the kings in between, then the influence of Kassites, Chaldeans, Amorites, Elamites, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, and Seleucids. Details get more dense as more is known of the later periods, but the speculation is well done, for example into the origins of the ziggurrat given as the biblical as the Tower of Babel.
The book contains Interesting insights as well as pure history. Hammurapi was not the fist law code generator. Also his code did not carry the force of law. It covers archeology, architecture, art, astronomy, mathematics and sociology as well as the military history of these ancient peoples as Oates explores the current (1979) state of knowledge in many areas. She is skillful at interweaving all the associations, friendly and otherwise with Egyptians, Syrians, Hittites, Medes and others in the surrounding areas. The influence of history's giants such as Cyrus and Alexander on the area is well done.
This packs a great deal of information into a short book with king lists, pictures and maps, although the maps constitute a challenge to find all of the significant places in the text.
