Though Babylon 5 never quite achieved the status of the Star Trek series in whose considerably large footsteps it followed, it did manage to create a intriguing and entertaining world. Babylon 5, much more so than Star Trek, relied on long plot arcs to sustain the complexities of its underlying conflicts, so if you missed an episode or two, you may have had a tough time getting back on track. Not to worry! You can now view them on video. Volume 5.7 compiles "Phoenix Rising" with "The Ragged Edge" from the fifth season. In "Phoenix Rising," the station has become a 2.5 million ton powder keg, with PsiCorps cop Bester (Walter Koenig, who played Chekov in the original Star Trek series) using questionable tactics to suppress a telepath revolt and Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) and Franklin (Richard Biggs) being held as rebel bargaining chips. No one can anticipate the rebels' next move. In "The Ragged Edge," G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) finds that his most profound pleasure in life is dutifully maintaining a lengthy personal journal. That private pleasure turns to shock when he returns from Centauri to discover the journal has published and that enthusiastic Narn readers now hail him as a demigod.--Tod Nelson

From the back cover

ETERNAL FLAME. The mission: maintain the fragile peace forged by the Alliance. The place: Babylon 5, during its fifth season. PHOENIX RISING--The station has become a 2.5-million-ton powder, what with Psi Corps cop Bester (Walter Koenig) using gung-ho tactics to suppress the telepath revolt and Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) and Franklin (Richard Biggs) being held as rebel bargaining chips. Yet no one could anticipate the telepaths' next move. THE RAGGED EDGE--For G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas), the one profound pleasure in life is the lengthy private journal he painstakingly maintains. That pleasure turns to shock when he returns from Centauri to discover the book has been published and that enthusiastic Narn readers now hail him as a demigod.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Brilliant Episodes from the 5th Season of Babylon Five, August 6, 2001
This review is from: Babylon 5 - Phoenix Rising / The Ragged Edge [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Phoenix Rising" concludes the story arc begun in "Tragedy of Telepaths". President Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) and Captain Lochley (Tracy Scoggins) stall for time hoping to avert a bloody confrontation between Bester (Walter Koenig) and his bloodhound team of Psi Corps cops and Byron's (Robin Atkin Downes) rogue telepath colony. The tragic ending foreshadows a possible conflict between Psi Corps and the rogue telegraphs who've accepted Byron's leadership. And we see that all is not psychologically well with Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle). In "Ragged Edge" G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) returns to Babylon 5 with Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik), unexpectedly finding that he has become a prophet worthy of veneration by his fellow Narns. And much to his dismay, he learns that his book has been published on Narn as "The Book of G'Kar", instantly becoming a religious bestseller. Meanwhile Garibaldi is sent on a mission to the Drazi home world, hoping to rescue a human pilot who has survived the latest raid by mysterious starships on interstellar shipping lanes. Without divulging further details, I will say that the episode draws to a close with Sheridan and Delenn (Mira Furlan) realizing who is behind these raids. Again, both episodes are replete with the fine writing and acting I've come to expect from series creator J. Michael Straczynski and the "Babylon 5" cast. Anyone hoping to see intelligent, first rate drama that is also great science fiction television won't be disappointed after watching these "Babylon 5" episodes.
