Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Toddlers and their parents will enjoy sharing these photographs of more than 70 animals (baby and adult). A wide variety of species appears, both wild and domestic-pigs, dogs, kangaroos, crocodiles, birds, fish, insects, and even earthworms. Animals are grouped in nontraditional ways; sounds, different colors, spots, stripes, and unique features are included. Each page has from three to six clearly focused photographs arranged atop a grid of narrow, colored lines. These lines surround but do not contain the creatures. A tiger seems to walk right out of his square. In the most effective pictures, animals gaze into the camera as though they are looking into viewers' eyes. While not essential, this book would be an appropriate addition to collections for the very young.

More About the Author

Roger Priddy is the creator of over two hundred best selling books for young children including Wipe Clean ABC, First 100 Words, and Fuzzy Bee.

When he was at school he couldn't decide between being a patisserie chef or going to art college. On the advice of his father he chose art college and trained as an illustrator before becoming a designer at Usborne Publishing.

Roger's love for children's early learning has led him to create some of the most successful children's non-fiction books, first at Dorling Kindersley (My First Word Book, Incredible Cross Sections and My First Cook Book) before he set up Priddy Books with St. Martins Press in New York where several of his books have sold over a million copies each including My Big Animal Book and Happy Baby Words.

In total he has sold over 65 million books worldwide and his books have been translated into over 30 languages.

He says "It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially the babies when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!"

Roger lives with his wife Zena in London and Cork, Ireland (when it's not raining, which isn't very often!) They have four children Sam, Rose, Alannah and Gabriel (and a dog called Wallace) who have given him most of his best ideas for his books. He still loves baking bread and cakes!

I bought this book for my 2-year old. It has few pages, and lots of pictures of the different animals. We talk about the sounds the animals make, their names and their babies. There are also drawings of other animals throughout the book. The only thing I found odd was that they didn't include goats! Go figure! All in all, my son enjoys this book a ton.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son is crazy about this book!, December 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby's Book of Animals (Hardcover)
My ten month old son has a lot of books, but this one is his absolute favorite. A nice way to introduce animals to a little one. I like the way the author sectioned the book into what sounds the animal makes, animal colors, a 'find my animal baby' section, etc. My son loves the beautiful, colorful photos and responds enthusiastically to them. We have three cats at home, and he squeals when he sees the photos of the cats and kittens. He picks this book out of his pile of toys, sits and pages through it, laughing at his favorite animals - the big pages are easy to turn, even for a wee one, and the book lies flat, so he can study the page he wants. But - of course it's not as strong as a board book, and he has destroyed this one - we have to buy another copy because it has fallen apart, and the tape we used to put it back together doesn't let the pages lie flat. Well worth the money though, because he loves the book.
