Excellent Sign Book for Little Beginners,
By BB "barbx" (South Riding, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby's First Signs (Board book)
We bought this book and its companion, "More Baby's First Signs" when my daughter was 8 months old. What I like about this book is that it's a board book, meant to withstand the abuse a small child can give it. The pages are easy to turn, the pictures are large and very cute and the signs are basic, "need to know" words like "more," "milk," and "bird." Also, diagrams on how to sign are easy to understand, which was important for me since I have no previous ASL experience. This book the perfect combination of a board book and a book to learn sign language. I think to expand on your child's sign vocabulary, you would need to buy additional books as these books have only 6-8 or so signs each -- but these are books are a good place to start, and your child can read them by themselves without ripping them to shreds!

Not reader-friendly/kid friendly,

I was disappointed by this book and its sequel, "More Baby's First Signs". The illustrations were dark and dull and would not engage a baby's attention. There were also very few words actually shown in each book. For an intro to baby sign language, I'd recommend My First Signs by Annie Kubler. It's fantastic!

The "Baby Signs" books are great to go through with a baby because the pictures are very inviting for the baby. I hoped these books would have that same inviting quality but be in ASL. Initially, my baby didn't like them as much as the "BabySigns" books, now at 15 months she seems to enjoy looking at the pictures in these books every bit as much as looking at the babies in the "Baby Signs" books. This books gives an excellent illustration of the ASL sign with each picture along with a drawing corresponding to the word.

Left Much To Be Desired,

At a glance, these looked like cute board books to use when teaching a baby to sign but I must say, the illustrations are just plain awful! I think my toddler could draw better pictures! Other than that, the book covers a fairly good number of signs but is definitely NOT a book I'd recommend or spend any money purchasing. It also seems all the titles by this particular author employ the same illustrator so be careful.

I had bought these books for my oldest son when he was an infant, three years ago. I have found these books to be invaulable, not only for teaching signing but also first words and using our imaginations. We have named the child in the book and make up stories about what is happening on in each page, silmilar to what you have to do with "Goodnight Gorilla." The pictures aren't elaborate but there is just enough detail to capture the child's attention and for the parent to learn the sign and teach the child. We have all 4 of these books and have already started reading them to our 8 month old, actually my oldest loves reading them to his baby brother.

A wonderful baby sign book just right for little kids!,

My 14-month old daughter Sarah loves this book, and its companion "More Baby's First Signs". She reads them to herself, making the signs as she sees the picture on each page. She knows most of the signs in the books, and I think she really enjoys the chance to use all those signs as she reads.I love the books too. The cute illustrations are very clear, showing exactly how to make the signs. Signing with Sarah has really paid off, even though she hears and speaks perfectly well for her age (which is to say, she hears everything and says monosyllables). At least half of what she says I understand only because she signs with it. I highly recommend these books for anyone who's using sign with their babies or toddlers. (And if you're not -- yet -- check out the "Sign with Your Baby" kit by Joseph Garcia.)

Fun book that my infants love,

I am a mother of two 10 month old little boys who are currently learning sign language. They LOVE this book and "read" it all of the time. It was also really helpful when I left for a short vacation and my mom (who doesn't know any sign language) was watching them. She was able to at least do these few signs with them while I was gone. I love it!
