Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Baby's Good Morning Book is a companion volume to Kay Chorao's splendid earlier work, The Baby's Bedtime Book. As the author explains in a liner note, "I wanted this book to be bright and happily aliveand to grow more awake as the pages are turned." Chorao has fulfilled her ambition handsomely. She's chosen nursery rhymes and poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, Emily Dickinson, Robert Browning and others, illustrating them with glowing, vibrant pictures. This is a book that will grow with its readers: babies will enjoy the colorful pictures and the melodic cadences of the verse; as they get older, they will appreciate the poetry more. Its very reasonable price makes it an ideal gift book.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Cheerful, brilliantly colored illustrations spread through the pages like the first rays of summer sun in this refreshing collection of short poems for children. Chorao's selections are a veritable bouquetauthors include Dickinson, Stevenson, Milne, Farjeon, Mother Goose, Walter Crane, and Frank Asch, so that "classic" pieces are warmly arranged among newer poems. Pictures glow in full- or half-page size within a clean frame on each page. Chorao uses a wide range of yellows and blues to capture early morning moments. Some illustrations show children in everyday rituals, sensually captured in rich colors. Other pictures realistically portray landscapes and wildlife; in fields, farms, and forests, Chorao shows the world waking up. Still other images are more fantastic, such as a group of dogs cooking a feast of pancakes. This blend of genres fits the potpourri of poems beautifully. A delightful companion to Chorao's Baby's Bedtime Book (1984) , Baby's Story Book (1985), and Baby's Lap Book (1977, all Dutton). 3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok, but I don't recommend it., December 10, 2007
This review is from: The Baby's Good Morning Book (Hardcover)
The stories are definitely morning stories. I don't like it as much as the Baby's Lap Book or the Baby's Bedtime Book by the same author. A few of the rhymes call people lazy and urge them to get out of bed. It doesn't seem to make sense to read it to my baby once we are both up, even though the rhymes are ok. I suppose if I memorized them, and said to them later, when he's older, to encourage him to get out of bed. But that's not what I was looking for. He likes the rhymes ok, but I don't, and there are plenty of great books to choose from.
