A true storyteller,
By Elizabeth Brasel (Fargo, ND United States) - See all my reviews

Anyone who enjoys Arlo Guthrie would love this CD (with or without kids) Arlo is a true storyteller and it really shows in this CD. Arlo performs all of the music and lends his voice to many different characters. It is wonderful to hear this great artist tell these old classics for children. It is pure joy for children of all ages. Great for long car trips.

Arlo Guthrie, like his father Woody, is a great folk singer with diverse talents. Here, he turns his attention to stories for young children. While there is some backing music, Arlo does not actually sing on any of the tracks. Instead, he tells the stories in much the way he might tell them to children at bedtime. He has a way with these stories that few parents could match.
Some of the stories are famous, beginning with The three bears, and also including The gingerbread boy, The house that Jack built, The hare and the turtle (which I've always known as the hare and the tortoise, but it's the same story), Little Red Riding Hood, Three billy goats gruff and Three little pigs. This is the kind of album that I would have appreciated in my infancy back in the fifties. Now something of a veteran, I can still appreciate it for what it is, if not in quite the same way. For the child in all of us, this is a great album.
