Five years ago I only had a couple of albums by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, but after purchasing all of his remaindered Fantasy/OJC discs I now own a dozen titles. Despite its latin name, the December 20, 1959 session "Bacalao" is another sax/organ-jazz swinger courtesy of the Tough Tenor's longtime collaborator Shirley Scott. Two other mainstays of his 1950s group are here as well, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Arthur Edgehill, along with percussionists Ray Barretto and Luis Perez. The inclusion of the latter two might make you think this is a latin jazz experiment but Barretto's contribution is so relaxed and understated (one of the things I love about him), that it just adds to the groove instead of overwhelming it. Thankfully, Perez is on the same page and follows Barretto's lead. There are some better Davis/Scott efforts to check out first -- the three Cookbook volumes and Gentle Jaws (see my review) come to mind -- but you won't look back if you get "Bacalao."
