A must for any fan of rap.

You can bet a party where they're tired of playing new stuff, Onyx will sure prevail in the classic lineup.
JAZZY
They are all worth the listen, except the skits of course, I skip them.

Every rapper now screams into the mic, sonically trashes the beats up in the studio and generally tries to scare people on the street into looking the other way when they pass them, but Onyx is the Rosetta stone of beat-you-in-your-head rap mentality. They don't sell themselves as gangstas in the way we've come to understand the term with rappers: this isn't a record about pimping or flashy jewelry or record sales. These cats are those guys on the subway looking to snatch your necklace or beat you down in the restroom at the club for selling bootlegged copies of their album at the local flea market.
The music - produced mainly by the late and great Jam Master Jay of Run D.M.C. fame - is New York cold, funky at every turn and catchy as super-virus. Lots of trunk-rattlers here, and incredibly sound production values: plenty of horns, tambourines and scary riffs. The rapping is loud, obnoxious and chanty. "Throw Your Gunz in the Air" and just about all of the interludes are about as infectious as a high school bleacher beat. Few groups since have captured the marriage of pure old-school simplicity and new school angst that Onyx had in spades. Even Onyx was unable to recapture the energy and naughty fun of this record. A classic, period, though not for the faint of sensibility.

This is onyx's debut and brought the East coast back in a time when death row ruled the airwaves it is bass heavy and the beats are bangin an the 4 bald heads mainly Sticky and Fredro reigned with there hardcore lyrics this is a classic and Throw your guns shiftee and Stick and move and the Radio friendly slam are all tight classics go cop this if you dont own it it is ill. I remember rockin to this joint when a was a freshman in high school onyx needs to make a return like this one day even though there last 2 albums were tight I want to here them on there ol crazy style again.

This album is just hilarious. It reminds me of the summer before my senior year of high school. These guys are the biggest foul-mouths on the planet, but they pull it off because of their insane delivery methods. I just love "Slam", "Bacdafucup" and "Getdafucout"...all classics.

In 1993, the quartet of Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Suave, and Big DS took the hip hop world by storm with their debut "Bacdafucup." As the title indicates, this album is not for the weak at heart, and the music is unadulterated hardcore boom bap hip hop. This was really original and was really unlike anything else in '93. The MCs raps are consistently on topic: threats, guns, and beating you up. But their style and charisma make this so entertaining. They always rap in wild yells or crazed whispers, emphasizing the menacing style. The production is also what makes this album so enjoyable. Handled largely by the legendary Jam Master Jay and his protege Chyskillz, the beats use minimal instrumentals and sampling, maintaining a very rough and violent sound with simple drumbeats and bass. This album is so consistent, every song is banging and there's not really one any worse than the others. For that same reason, though, there's not really any that stand out, and some kind of run together. Overall "Bacdafucup" is an entertaining rap album that still sounds pretty fresh even today.

The first full track is "Bichasniguz," which is very representative of the album at whole: tough, threatening lyrics and great hardcore beats. "Throw Ya Gunz" is a highlight, with its call and response chorus and some of the best verses on the album, especially Sticky's, and the next track "Here N Now" basically picks up right where the previous track left off. "Atak of da Bal-Hedz" is my favorite song on the album, I think the lyrics are funny and paranoid sounding and the claustrophobic beat has cool horns and scratches in it. "Blac Vagina Finda" has a head-nodding bass heavy beat. "N... Bridges" and "Onyx Is Here" are both lyrically strong and well-produced.

In 1993, the commercial side of rap music got a little more grimey, and the underground side of rap music got pushed to a level of hardcore never seen before. True, this description also fits the surprising success of "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" like a glove, but for all their bravado the Clan never shaved their heads bald while brandishing pistols and stomping a big Timb' style boot in your face. For Onyx, that's just the COVER of their seminal debut album "Bacdafucup."

With a recently minted distribution deal for his independent (or some might say vanity) label JMJ Records, Run-D.M.C.'s own Jam Master Jay was looking for a group to be the next BIG thing, and in Onyx he struck gold in a big way. The conception of Onyx at first seems predictably industry for what even today still gets labelled "gangsta rap music": describe violence, talk a lot of s***, and try hard as hell to scare the parents of rebellious children from the hoods to the burbs. Two things made Onyx different though: the infectious chemistry of putting Big DS, Suave, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz together; and the HEAVY BOOM of the bass bottoms provided by Jay himself along with his co-horts Chyskillz and Kool Tee.

Some people might have been skeptical at first. Many may have even slept on their infectious (and extremely macho) first single "Throw Ya Gunz," but these angry rappers who called themselves Da Mad Face Invasion simply couldn't be ignored any more when "Slam" hit the charts. Long before Ludacris had people throwing 'bows, Onyx was encouraging full-fledged riots with this raucous cross between hip-hop and a mosh pit.
