Masterful production and unmatched intensity,

Every rapper now screams into the mic, sonically trashes the beats up in the studio and generally tries to scare people on the street into looking the other way when they pass them, but Onyx is the Rosetta stone of beat-you-in-your-head rap mentality. They don't sell themselves as gangstas in the way we've come to understand the term with rappers: this isn't a record about pimping or flashy jewelry or record sales. These cats are those guys on the subway looking to snatch your necklace or beat you down in the restroom at the club for selling bootlegged copies of their album at the local flea market. The music - produced mainly by the late and great Jam Master Jay of Run D.M.C. fame - is New York cold, funky at every turn and catchy as super-virus. Lots of trunk-rattlers here, and incredibly sound production values: plenty of horns, tambourines and scary riffs. The rapping is loud, obnoxious and chanty. "Throw Your Gunz in the Air" and just about all of the interludes are about as infectious as a high school bleacher beat. Few groups since have captured the marriage of pure old-school simplicity and new school angst that Onyx had in spades. Even Onyx was unable to recapture the energy and naughty fun of this record. A classic, period, though not for the faint of sensibility.

Absolute classic debut by the Bal-Hedz. Beat Dr Dre's Chronic for best rap album of that year. Shows how good this is. All the songs are classics, but the best of them are Bacdafucup - best intro EVER, its sick as, Throw Ya Gunz - Sweet as hard hitting song, Atak Of Da Bal-Hedz - My favorite song, they hit it so hard, classic song, Blac Vagina Finda - maaad lyrics, Onyx Is Here - Very similar to to Bacdafucup, but a full song with different chorus, Slam - CLASSIC, Stik 'N' Move - love this song too, Shifftee - another classic, Da Nex Niguz - great lyrics another awesome song, Getdafucout - the outro, and its one of the best. Overall, if you dont have this rap album, well you must have this. Another essential piece of rap music. If you don't have this and call yourself a rap fan, then your opinion is garbage, fo' real.

This album is just hilarious. It reminds me of the summer before my senior year of high school. These guys are the biggest foul-mouths on the planet, but they pull it off because of their insane delivery methods. I just love "Slam", "Bacdafucup" and "Getdafucout"...all classics.

A Classic,

This is a classic album. Most of the songs hit the airwaves back in 94 when hiphop was becoming more mainstream. You can bet a party where they're tired of playing new stuff, Onyx will sure prevail in the classic lineup.

Simple and hardcore...original boom bap,
By
This review is from: Bacdafucup (Audio CD)
In 1993, the quartet of Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Suave, and Big DS took the hip hop world by storm with their debut "Bacdafucup." As the title indicates, this album is not for the weak at heart, and the music is unadulterated hardcore boom bap hip hop. This was really original and was really unlike anything else in '93. The MCs raps are consistently on topic: threats, guns, and beating you up. But their style and charisma make this so entertaining. They always rap in wild yells or crazed whispers, emphasizing the menacing style. The production is also what makes this album so enjoyable. Handled largely by the legendary Jam Master Jay and his protege Chyskillz, the beats use minimal instrumentals and sampling, maintaining a very rough and violent sound with simple drumbeats and bass. This album is so consistent, every song is banging and there's not really one any worse than the others. For that same reason, though, there's not really any that stand out, and some kind of run together. Overall "Bacdafucup" is an entertaining rap album that still sounds pretty fresh even today.
The first full track is "Bichasniguz," which is very representative of the album at whole: tough, threatening lyrics and great hardcore beats. "Throw Ya Gunz" is a highlight, with its call and response chorus and some of the best verses on the album, especially Sticky's, and the next track "Here N Now" basically picks up right where the previous track left off. "Atak of da Bal-Hedz" is my favorite song on the album, I think the lyrics are funny and paranoid sounding and the claustrophobic beat has cool horns and scratches in it. "Blac Vagina Finda" has a head-nodding bass heavy beat. "N... Bridges" and "Onyx Is Here" are both lyrically strong and well-produced. "Slam" is widely considered a classic hip hop track, and it's a strong point of the disc, but not really too unlike the other good songs. "Stick N Muve" has some good horn samples. The last three songs, "Shiftee," "Phat N All Dat," and "Da Next N..." all end the album strongly, more of the boom bap that this album provides so well. "Bacdafucup" is unique and a very entertaining hip hop album, perfect for playing in the car or locker room. It's a product of a great concept and good execution with a great group of MCs and production team. I highly recommend this album to 90s rap fans, this album was ahead of its time and is great for any collection.

Masterpiece, And For The Most Part "Onyx's Best Album",
By
This review is from: Bacdafucup (Audio CD)
In 1993, the commercial side of rap music got a little more grimey, and the underground side of rap music got pushed to a level of hardcore never seen before. True, this description also fits the surprising success of "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" like a glove, but for all their bravado the Clan never shaved their heads bald while brandishing pistols and stomping a big Timb' style boot in your face. For Onyx, that's just the COVER of their seminal debut album "Bacdafucup."
With a recently minted distribution deal for his independent (or some might say vanity) label JMJ Records, Run-D.M.C.'s own Jam Master Jay was looking for a group to be the next BIG thing, and in Onyx he struck gold in a big way. The conception of Onyx at first seems predictably industry for what even today still gets labelled "gangsta rap music": describe violence, talk a lot of s***, and try hard as hell to scare the parents of rebellious children from the hoods to the burbs. Two things made Onyx different though: the infectious chemistry of putting Big DS, Suave, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz together; and the HEAVY BOOM of the bass bottoms provided by Jay himself along with his co-horts Chyskillz and Kool Tee. Some people might have been skeptical at first. Many may have even slept on their infectious (and extremely macho) first single "Throw Ya Gunz," but these angry rappers who called themselves Da Mad Face Invasion simply couldn't be ignored any more when "Slam" hit the charts. Long before Ludacris had people throwing 'bows, Onyx was encouraging full-fledged riots with this raucous cross between hip-hop and a mosh pit. It's a measure of this song's popularity that even MTV icons Beavis and Butthead paid tribute to it by rapping the chorus in the introduction to "Bounce" off "The Beavis and Butthead Experience." More memorable than the chorus itself though was the third verse by Sticky Fingaz; one which made such an indelible impression it had fans anticipating his solo album for nearly a decade afterward: Misogynists should probably be glad Sticky Fingaz cares so much about the female orgasm, but they'll probably still be disgusted by the fact Onyx treat all women like sex objects; proven by lines like "Praise the Lord, cause even nuns get stuck!" The timid or easily offended probably shouldn't have picked up an album with a parental advisory on it in the first place though, and Onyx repeatedly earn it with stories that would be rated R in theatres: guns, sex, drugs and violence are praised throughout - all of those traditional hallmarks of American entertainment. The dirty little secret that's really not so secret is that people enjoy living vicariously through the fictional accounts of notorious criminals, and Onyx embraces that truth to the hilt. So much so, in fact, that a few tracks with weaker beats fail just because the movie/novel/album drags on a little too long, like a gangsta movie that's one reel too long. Towards the end you'll want to skip songs like "Stik 'N' Muve" and "Shiftee" although the conclusion is redeemed by the braggadociously silly "Phat ('N' All Dat)" and the comedic fellatio of "Da Nex Ni***" as illustrated by this lament of frustration from rapper Suave: For the most part, the plusses on this album are many for fans of hardcore rap, with Sticky Fingaz providing the needed comic relief if and when things get too serious. Other than the six unnecessary skits and a couple of throwaway songs that don't hold up to the high standard the group themselves set, "Bacdafucup" is a solid debut album for Onyx from beginning to finish. The curse that would plague this group for the rest of the 90's was that after such a classic debut, it got increasingly hard for them to catch lightning again. Forget that for the moment though, and if you're a fan of the good ol' ultra-violence, cop this album if you haven't ALREADY done so.

This was no doubt a classic back in 93 , it was very rough and high tempo'd. It is very hardcore and exactly wacth you need to prouduce a great record. The prouduction is provided by jmj[rip]
so this no doubt did not disapoint. The lyrics are mostly choural during hooks. Compared to all we got is us -it lacks in vibe but still doesant disapoint. The best songs being , slam , throw ya gunz, phat, nex niguz , attack of the bald heads , here n now, onyx is here..... But my favourite and probably the most hardcore has to be bichtassnigguz . The song has one incredible base - just pure hardcore n tough . |
