This first volume of a two volume set of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos" is well worth looking for and listening to. The Boston Baroque Orchestra, under the baton of Martin Pearlman, make this recording one of the better recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos you will find.
The liner notes, written by the conductor, make this album well worth reading as well as listening to. The liner notes include German and French versions of the conductor's additional information.
The period instruments give this album a feel of something like you might have heard if you had attended a concert given by the composer. The very unusual orchestration, sometimes difficult for orchestras to capture, that is called for by Bach in the Brandenburg Concertos are given a lush and faithful treatment by the orchestra and the conductor.
This album, and its complement, the second CD with the other three concertos, makes for an ideal addition to a library of classical music. If you own other versions of the Brandenburg Concertos, you will find this album a little different from what you have heard before due to its use of period instruments.

This is a lively and enjoyable rendition of these well-known pieces. The tempos are somewhat fast, as is typically with historically informed performances. I dig that; others might not. Reading the liner notes (or just listening to the music) it's clear that Pearlman has given some careful thought to both the playing of the pieces and the recording.

The oddest thing about this performance is the 15-second version of the third concerto. Pearlman rather tersely states that there is "no evidence" that Bach intended for improvisation or other embellishment, given the finished nature of the score. While I don't pretend to be a musicologist that seems kind of dubious; I can't think of very many 15-second movements to any other pieces. I initially thought something was wrong with CD.

Anyway, this is still a version that is well worth listening to and might give you a new perspective on the works.

Having read the reviews giving this wonderful performance only a two- three-star rating, I thought I would take another listen to the recording which I've had for a few years. I must disagree with those lower ratings. This is a superb, full-bodied, and lively performance that is well recorded. I do not feel that the performance tempo is too fast as one reviewer opined. Potential buyers should listen to the sound samples and decide; I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

The sound and playing are fine, but the tempos are so fast that it sounds as if the conductor's on speed. The fast tempos completely miss the beauty of the pieces. Extremely disappointing. Unless you're a speed freak, avoid.

3 1/2

This version does sound a little underwhelming for such an immortal piece, though the authentic instrumentation does have its limited perks. Newbies wouldn't notice the difference, completists pick apart pros and cons, but the rest of us should settle for better definitive recordings.
