Having read the reviews giving this wonderful performance only a two- three-star rating, I thought I would take another listen to the recording which I've had for a few years. I must disagree with those lower ratings. This is a superb, full-bodied, and lively performance that is well recorded. I do not feel that the performance tempo is too fast as one reviewer opined. Potential buyers should listen to the sound samples and decide; I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

What a bargain! ! ! All 6 of the magnificent "Brandenbenburg Concerti", played by the early music group the "Boston Baroque under the leadership of Mr.. Martin Pearlman, and recorded in crisp, clean fidelity by those maters of sound, my favorite recording company Telarc records. AND, as usual, a very fine and detailed booklet is included, even identifying the musicians in each of the sextet of these masterworks in the repertoire of the early 18th Century. Written in 1721 and dedicated to the youngest son of the Elector of Saxony, these wonderful gems are, and have been for nearly 300 years, staples of the world of Classical Music. They have found their way into virtually every classroom and concert hall on the planet, as well as having been attached to inter-planetary spacecraft in hope some far, more advanced and distant civilization will discover their splendid refinement and beauty. Somehow, I think "E. T." may now be taping his toesto their rhythms, unable to hide his pleasure.
The use oforiginal instrumentsis friendly to the senses, with no schreching, grating or sourness, as is ocasionaly the case, and he depth of the soundstage is thre dimensional. Pearlman's tempi are crisp, trimed of excesand to the point, thus he languishes not.
This may be the shor
test review I have ever posted, because the impression I got from this CD is that definitive.
d 5 star!! says it all! ! ! There are, in the nearly endless catalog, dozens of excellent recordings o these short concertntante works, as one can imagine, and nearly ALL of them are quite good, especially thos using pared down forces, but I vastly prefer the specialization of the goups dedicated to the Baroque Era and the period instruments employed in Bach's day. It's not just their sound, but the correct and unique manner in
shich they are played that brings a smile to my facre and a warmth to my heart

This first volume of a two volume set of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos" is well worth looking for and listening to. The Boston Baroque Orchestra, under the baton of Martin Pearlman, make this recording one of the better recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos you will find.
The liner notes, written by the conductor, make this album well worth reading as well as listening to. The liner notes include German and French versions of the conductor's additional information.
The period instruments give this album a feel of something like you might have heard if you had attended a concert given by the composer. The very unusual orchestration, sometimes difficult for orchestras to capture, that is called for by Bach in the Brandenburg Concertos are given a lush and faithful treatment by the orchestra and the conductor.
This album, and its complement, the second CD with the other three concertos, makes for an ideal addition to a library of classical music. If you own other versions of the Brandenburg Concertos, you will find this album a little different from what you have heard before due to its use of period instruments.
