I believe that Bach's complete cantatas beyond just the most famous ones belong in the collections of anyone who loves classical music. I have found that they are consentrated masterpieces. And each one is completely different. I am enamored of Rilling's cycle because of the complete dedication he and his performers give to each work the perform. The only people who will not like Rilling are those who insist on period intruments( I have tried Gardiner and one Koopman but find Rilling the best)I love the booklets that explan each canata and what to look for in them in order to best appreciate Bach's mastery of finding the best way to express the words.
Since the BWV numbers are not sequential this disc contains works from different parts of Bach's life.
BWV 27 Who knows how near my end is opens with a heart rending chorale
with moments of solo break out. The Aria for bass accompanied by violin is one o the most beautiful in Bach with the longing for death as the end of worldly troubles.
BWV 28 Pleas God the year is ending is a setting for the last day of the year is most remarkable for its 5 minute chorale extolling the goodness of God
Bwv 29 We give the thanks was wriiten on the election of new town council memmbers with the blessing of the church has an enhanced instrumentation to meet the splendor of the occasion using trumpets and percussion in the opening sinfonia and in one of the most sparsely orchestrated aria using only violin and cello the tenors Hallelujah is a wonder to hear.
Please buy as many Rilling cantatas as you can afford.
Please excuse typos i have a neuroloic disease.

Helmut Rilling was the first to record all the Bach cantatas. He didn't start out with that intention, but that's what eventually happened, over a period of about 20 years. Rilling used women's voices and modern instruments, but it has always been my view that this is music for eternity and it should not be shoved in a musical straitjacket, to be played THIS way, but not THAT way. In any case, women's voices are probably a better approximation to what Bach would have had than modern boys' voices - boys' voices broke much later in those days, and that sound is forever lost to us.

The best known of these cantatas is BWV29, with its opening sinfonia and then the chorale which was to become the great concluding chorale of the B Minor Mass. The year-end cantata BWV28 has an opening aria that must have required a top-notch boy soprano. Here it is played quite more slowly than is normally the case, but it sounds fine (and is well sung). And Rilling really makes the alto-tenor duet dance. All good stuff.

I have the complete Rilling cantata set. It comes up cheaply every now and then. Worth getting.

P.S. The complete set will be released in September 2011 at a bargain-basement price.
