This review is from: Bach - Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (Audio CD)
In George Bernard Shaw's only novel, CASHEL BYRON'S PROFESSION, the protagonist, a bare-knuckle boxing champion, is asked his opinion of a new mural of medieval combat commissioned by an wealthy noblewoman. He demolishes it based on his ring experience; the figures are stiff, awkward, off-balance and would be easily defeated. Fighting, he says, becomes an art when the training and technique disappear and the results become graceful, spontaneous.....easy. "If it isn't easy, it isn't art", he says.
At my first listen to Korevaar's Goldbergs, it seemed over embellished and I put it aside after a few tracks. I was not listening carefully. At all. Coming back to it, I am struck by the grace and ease. I assume, if you are reading this review, that you are a Bach/Goldberg addict as I am. Isn't it great that so many pianists capable of art continue to find fresh interps of this magical music? Isn't it great that CDs take up as little room as they do so it's easy, despite the astonishment of well-meaning family, to purchase yet another version? Life is good. |
