This review is from: Bach: Goldberg Variations (Audio CD)
This live recording of Nikolayeva is a mix. In contrast to the other orthodox interpretations, it sounds like a exotic and personal rendition, together with lots of wrong notes. Some are minors, perhaps a key or two around the intended one or a note from nowhere, some are very obvious and annoying, made me think that I am listening to anything but Goldberg.
Nikolayeva's speed is quite relaxed and casual. If your impression of Bach tells you that his music should be played at a strictly controlled and relatively constant speed, this is not a very good example of that. So if you are going to buy your first Goldberg, this is not the one. First consider something like the by the book versions like Perahia, Hewitt, even Dinnerstein or Zhu Xiao Mei. Then if you are ready, then Gould then something then something. At last, this one. |
