Format: Audio CD
Charles Curtis is a internationally regarded cellist who teaches at University of California San Diego and has made a specialty in contemporary music. Classically trained and well respected in all the cello repertoire Curtis still likes to tweak music to make us listen more closely to what the composer is saying. It has been said that `many composers search their entire lifetime hoping to find a performer as resolutely dedicated, adventurous and talented as Charles Curtis. Perhaps the San Diego-based cellist is best known as a longtime collaborator of minimalist icon La Monte Young - their intense working relationship spans 24 years - yet Curtis is also renowned for his defining performances of works by Eliane Radigue, Morton Feldman, Terry Jennings, Alison Knowles, Alvin Lucier and many others.'

Yet here in this recital Charles Curtis returns of Bach, performing three of the solo suites of cello (Nos. 1 in G major, 3 in C major, and 4 in E-Flat major) as enhanced by Curtis' imaginative addition to a continuo accompaniment with organ and drums. That may be off-putting to some and sound gimmicky to others. But just listen to the subtle extension of Bach's genius here and likely you will be converted to the concept.

Charles Curtis plays the cello part as written but then adds very, very subtle sounds with Anthony Burr at the organ (the instrument sounds more like the Baroque version, the Positiv) and Naren Budhakar playing the tabla (an Indian drum whose playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected in the mnemonic syllables. The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay).

Lightly, and tastefully, if you're Charles Curtis. The Organ & percussion seem a good fit, if you're in the mood for that sort of thing. I don't think Bach would have minded.
