Editorial Reviews

"An utterly distinctive voice in the forest of Bach interpretation" - New York Times

On her new album, Bach Inventions & Sinfonias, renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein reconnects with the foundation of her musical career and what she's best known for a solo album of J.S. Bach's keyboard works. The recording was made at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York by Grammy-winning producer Adam Abeshouse. The Inventions and Sinfonias, commonly known as the 3-part inventions, were originally written in 1723 as a musical guide for keyboard players and remain a core part of the piano repertoire for students, amateurs, and professional musicians alike. Bach Inventions & Sinfonias features beautiful, well-known music by one of the most popular composers of all time, performed by the premiere Bach pianist of our time.

I have been listening to Bach for years and somehow I just found Simone Dinnerstein. This is a great, sophisticated recording; she has total command of the music and imparts its flow and character. She has skill in the range of Murray Peraiha and Andras Schiff and has some of the sound and feel of Gould. It is a fair comparison. I will listen to it along with their renditions. What a fantastic surprise.

Everyone who has had piano lessons, or lived with someone who had piano lessons, knows the Bach Inventions. They can be tedious. They can be painful. Over and over. Miraculously, Simone Dinnerstein plays them as Bach imagined them before he even wrote them. Each is a shining gem. I don't know how they recorded the piano so beautifully, either. The sound is perfect -- no hammers or levers here, just pure tones. This CD must be heard to be believed. Once you hear it, you will buy it.

Bach had a genius for integrating simplicity and complexity, and, on this CD, Simone Dinnerstein, a rising star pianist, conveys that exquisitely. This is sublime music making that can completely absorb you and even move you to tears. Both the piano used and the piano technician, as well as the recording engineer, are credited, and rightly so, for the piano sound is pristine. Warning: As of August, 2014, Amazon was selling an “imported” version of the CD for more than twice the $13 price of the non-imported version.

Noted Brooklyn, NY native and Juilliard-trained classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein demonstrates again why she should be viewed as one of the premier contemporary interpreters of J. S. Bach in her recording of the Bach Inventions & Sinfonias BWV 772-801. Though purists may be tempted to ignore this recording, I would urge them to reconsider, not least because she emphasizes the cantabile, danceable, aspects of Bach's keyboard music through her unique, Romantic, interpretations of familiar works like Invention No. 8 in F Major, BWV 779 or Invention No. 12 in A Major, BWV 783 or Sinfonia no. 6 in E Major, BWV 792. I find much to commend in her playing, even if I tend to be more a fan of period instrument-informed performances of the kind emphasized by Andras Schiff in his critically acclaimed recording of the Goldberg Variations. (I would rank hers, Murray Perahia and Schiff's as the three best modern recordings of the Goldberg Variations, with hers especially noteworthy given the unusual circumstances that led to its recording and subsequent release.) Anyone who reads the accompanying liner notes should realize that she has thought long and hard about these pieces, noting how they formed an essential part of her musical education as a young pianist growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970s and 1980s; if for no other reason than these, her latest recording of Bach keyboard works should be due ample serious consideration by potential purchasers as well as fellow reviewers.

Simone Dinnerstein is definitely one of the foremost classical pianists of our time, having yielded a rich recorded musical legacy that includes recordings of the Beethoven cello sonatas with her Juilliard classmate and friend, cellist Zuill Bailey, as well as her celebrated Goldberg Variations album.

I just heard Simone give a masterclass and play two concerts in Portland, Oregon. I have to say she is a remarkable artist and a very warm, approachable person. In the masterclass, she listened intently to each student's performance and tried to clarify for them what they were trying to project versus their actual sound. You hear the sound in your "inner ear" first, and then try to reproduce it on the piano. I think she gave each student new ways to think about their pieces and how to practice and perform them.

The concerts were a treat. She included first time performances (for her) of works by Francis Poulenc and George Crumb (a Christmas Suite for extended piano), juxtaposed with Bach Inventions and a French Suite, Schubert Impromptus and Sonata in B flat, and a work composed for her by Nico Muhly only two years ago. Creative, gutsy programming that she executes with good taste, sensitivity, and powerful interpretation. If she had a gargantuan ego, I wouldn't blame her because it would only match her talent. But she does not, and that makes her an even greater artist in my book. She really deserves the great success she is now enjoying.

Oh, and I did buy her recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations and the Inventions/Sinfonias........and so should you!

I'm not an ardent classical music fan per se, but I love piano music--especially solo piano. I listen to a lot of Jarrett, Mehldau, Olafur Arnolds, and my latest favorite Nils Frahm. I'm also a fan of the piano soundtrack that explores a theme and approaches that theme from different angles like the Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close soundtrack and works by Ludovico Eindaudi. Like those soundtracks these melodies often repeat phrases and expressions, leaving a comprehensive whole that is satisfying. The sound of the piano is soothing and Dinnerstein's interpretation is delicate and mysterious. I stream it everywhere....
