5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable music! November 28, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Bach's organ music towers above so much else in the Western canon, that it needs no comment. But as one who enjoys going deeply into a composer for sever days, I found this set superb. I've listened to the entire set from start to finish several times; there's simply nothing else I've ever heard that compares. I'm not an organist, so I can't speak to the technical details of the performance - but Marie-Claire Alain, to my ear, delivers the perfect match of restraint, virtuosity, and grandeur for this work. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This set is superb!! A must own collection! February 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I do so agree with John Aaron! This set by Marie-Claire Alain is in a class
by itself! I have a few other sets of Bach's organ works by other organists
such as Ton Koopman, Kevin Bowyer, and Olivier Vernet. Those other sets are
very well performed. But here in this set, Marie-Claire Alain for me has a
certain unique warmth, sensitivity, and power in her approach that those other
organists I've just mentioned seem to be so radically different in (but not
necessarily better), in comparison. Marie's charming feminine touch and creativity
shine through, with her old school training and and superb skill and experience.
And the organs played in this set are beautifully atmospheric, and very resonate.
Her's is in fact the set that I listen to most often I have to admit. I cannot
praise her enough! For anyone new to Bach's organ works, this set is an excellent
one to start with. And for anyone familiar with Bach's organ works who may
have a discriminating ear, this set I feel will completely satisfy, and fill
the senses! To me, it just does not get any better than this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A lasting treasure January 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A little product information for those of you who may be interested in the discography. This collection, is a 15-CD box set with a total running time of 18 hours, 39 minutes, and 17 seconds. It includes an informative booklet, printed in English, French, and German, with photos of the organist, 18 pages of detailed track listings, providing the name and location of the organ used in each instance, and eight pages of notes about the different categories of organ works by J.S. Bach, and the time periods when they were composed. It is ADD, meaning that the original recordings, made between May, 1978, and April, 1980, were analog recordings that were later digitally remastered. Yolanta Skura did an admirable job as recording engineer. I purchased this set simultaneously with the set of Alain’s 1990's digital recordings and find the sound quality to be comparable. The individual sleeves employed in both box sets are of sturdy varnished cardstock.

From the very first disc, containing the trio sonatas, I was struck not only with the wonderful playing, but with the immediacy of the sound quality. The treble notes and overtones are captured about as perfectly as one might imagine, and there is no unpleasant shrillness or distortion of any kind. With my subwoofer engaged, it felt as though my entire living room became a natural extension of the organ, which is to say that the bass notes are solid and substantial.

I have not yet formed any opinion as to which of Marie-Claire Alain's sets of Bach's organ works is the best. Suffice to say that I am extremely pleased with this purchase. In terms of the musicianship and sound quality, I have never heard better, and these ADD recordings sound just as good as the later digital versions of Alain's recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The consummate Bach organ collection February 18, 2013

It is a wonderful thing to be able to own the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach; it is doubly wonderful that the organist is Marie-Claire Alain. This historic collection is a must-have for any serious organist.
